Medication Alternative

Has anyone taken their child off of ADD/ADHD medication? And, changed their diet. How do you cope? What have you done for their diet? Does it help? I am asking because I have a seven year-old daughter. She has ADHD and has been on four medications in a year. Recently, she has been off of medication for a week, for the last week, because she was having chest pain and heart palpitations. These medications frighten me. I want to find alternatives like changing her diet or any other suggestions you know that work. There is no telling if there has been other damage to her body by the medication.

Alternative Therapies

Hi there:

ADDitude has some very popular articles about Alternative Therapies (Including diet, exercise, therapies, neurofeedback, etc.) that you might find helpful. Of course, every child is different, but certainly some of these strategies are worth trying if you feel her medication is not working as it should...

Homeopathic remedies

Hi - I just recently decided to try 'natural healing' with my 10 year son. He has been diagnosed with ADHD with extreme impulsivity. He has been on alot of different types of medications - all seem to work for a short period - than his body must build a tolerance to them rendering them ineffective. So I thought I would try these natural products and change his diet. Supposedly, Milk (gluetin and casein) are very bad for children with ADHD. And also wheat and sugar - so we are going to try to cut back on these. I let you know if I see any results.

Working memory training -ie Cogmed

I have an 18 year old- dx. with inattentive ADD while freshman in HS. complete evaluation done . Superior range IQ. No impulsivity problems - social and laid back. Has made alot of progress with academics. School is a strugglle for him and alot of the problems have to do with poor working memory. He takes concerta daily without too bad a reaction except for some weight loss.. He did better than expected on PSAT exam and we are starting the college tours. He is currently a junior. My question to anyone out there is : Has anyone tried for themselves or for a child any of the working memory training programs. I have read about Cogmed for the last few years and more and more data looks promising. I feel that it can do no physcial harm and if it improves my son's day to day memory and organizational skills- I'm there. He is a young adult now and I really see where being in college and later in working world - he will be labeled as a nice person but a space cadet . He often doesn't remember details and directions- can spend alot of time looking for stuff. I am an APRN for 28 years and honestly don't see the benefit of adding or increasing meds. Love to hear any input.

ADD-care

Most of my clients who were previously stabalized on the stimulants are now on ADD-care and doing just as well without the side effects. 85% use the supplement alone and many use it as a last dose since it can be taken after 4PM. It has no appetite or sleep disturbances.
