At a LOSS!!

My sweet 8 yr old son has gone from being a bright, highly-intelligent (IQ of 152), very affectionate, fun-loving little boy to a sullen, moody, totally inattentive/completely distracted, sometimes hateful kid!

His diagnosis is ADHD and Asperger Syndrome. The AS is pretty much in hand, it's the ADHD that's the culprit! He's been on 4 different adhd meds - adderall, focalin (THAT was a nightmare), Concerta, and Vyvanse (another nightmare). We're now trying him on natural products (Nature Remedies products BrightSpark, Focus Formula, and Mind Soothe). He's been on these for over a week, with really no change at all - the teacher reports him crawling under his desk and laughing at reprimands.

Adderall worked very well in the beginning, but when it seemed to not work anymore, his psychiatrist increased the dosage which resulted in tick. So he changed him to Focalin, which lasted all of 3 days - the tics were horrible! So, he puts him on Concerta, which lasted the longest, and seemed to work the best - until he seemed to develope an immunity to it - whatever it was, it seemed to stop working. An increase in that dosage and he was bouncing off the walls! Sooooooooooooooo.... on to Vyvanse and again with the tics and extremely emotional!

I decided to try him on the herbal/natural products. These seem to take a pretty long time to work. This past week he's crawled under his desk, pretented he's a horse, shoved his teacher;s arms - God only knows what else. All I do know is that, this is not my little boy!

I'm at a loss. Has anyone else been where we are now? Any advise??

Some Resources

Hello Peggylynn:

I feel for you as you work to decode your son's recent problems and develop the right treatment plan for him. Of course, there are no universal answers, but I did find a few ADDitude articles that might give you (and your doctor) a few new ideas...

Thank you

Anni thank you for the links you posted. I did read all of them.

We tried the alternative path for a few weeks, but couldn't take it anymore. We went with the company Nature's Remedies and used Bright Spark, Focus Formula, and Mind soothe. After 3 weeks of not only no help, but getting worse, we had to go back to meds.

Beginning today, my little's boys psychiatrist started him on Concerta, 18mg twice per day, and switched him from Risperdal to Abilify. The Risperdal had quit working long ago to control the aggression. I'm hoping abilify works. My son seems to be getting even more depressed, aggressive and mean as the days go by. This entire school year has been a regression for him. Last year his teacher has spoke of placing him in a gifted program. Not happening .
