Vyvanse and HR
My 9 y/o son was diagnosed with ADD at age 6. It seems he has been on just about every stimulant, including vyvanse, and we are now working our way through some less "traditional" combo meds to try to find something that works. How your son reacts to the medication will change after he's been on it for a few days. I don't know specifically about the HR, but if you doc feels it's safe I think you'd be wise to give it a few days. Changes can occur further down the road too. The reason we have been though so many stimulants is that once my son has been on them for a month or 6 weeks, he starts being very emotional and having melt downs at home. Initially the doc said it couldn't be caused by the meds because the meltdowns never happened at school. Well, after trying so many different things the doc is finally agreeing with us that the meds have been the problem. Right now my son is on a combo of Strattera and Concerta. We've been doing this a while (since mid Feb.) and I was beginning to think we'd found something we could live with,, But just in the last couple of days, he's been getting upset over homework in the evenings. So, no matter what medication your son ends up taking, don't dismiss it as a potential for the cause of problems down the road - even if the docs says it can't be.
All that being said, I've taken Vyvanse since Nov. and absolutely love it!!! It wasn't until I started trying to help my son that I found out there was a reason for all my disorganization and scatter-brained-ness. The best way I can describe it is that Vyvanse turns down the noise in my brain, and it give me sooooo much patience. Something I despartely need when things are not going smoothly with my son. Since the beginning it has elevated my HR a bit, but it's hasn't been to a point I was worried about it. One other annoying side effect for me, is that it would make me sweat. I'd have to bring extra shirts to work because I would get big wet circles under my arms. That has finally stopped happening in just the last couple of weeks.
I hope you will find a medication that works for your son right away, If not, it is worth the effort to continue to try different meds. And if you feel strongly that a medication is causing problems - stick to your guns, even if the doc disagrees. These medication react differently in everyone and no one knows your son better than you do.
Good luck, Brenda
