They Should Rename It "Attention REGULATION Disorder"

I had a chat with a student in the learning assistance centre class I work in at a high school, who told me his doctor thinks his diagnosis of having ADHD is wrong... the reason? "because I can concentrate on things that I'm really interested in them" Well, DUH, the research shows that HYPERFOCUS is a symptom. I found it pretty surprising that a medical doctor didn't know that part of ADHD.

I know that it IS about being able to REGULATE my attention. That's what the prefrontal cortex does.

sheesh. sorry just need to vent.

Attention Surplus Disorder

I've also heard someone suggest it be called Attention Surplus Disorder since those with ADHD are distracted by so many things, that is, they pay too much attention. They can't filter out what is unimportant, except of course when they are in a hyperfocus mode. It is rather scary when doctors and some educators are so misinformed about ADHD. I met a high school counselor who didn't know adults could have ADHD! She thought only children did. I know of a few situations where a teacher told a parent that their child did not have ADHD, only to find out later that their child did indeed have ADHD. I have reminded parents that teachers are not doctors. Yes, many times a teacher can be helpful in their observations but they are not qualified to diagnose. And the amount of knowledge teachers have on ADHD can vary from one teacher to another.

It is important to find a doctor who is knowledgeable regarding ADHD. There is a difference between knowing about the disorder and understanding ADHD and how to treat it. That's why we travel a distance to see a knowledgeable doctor. it makes a big difference.

Ithink it needs to be called something othe than defecit

I think it should be called something other than defecits I am ADD/ADHD and I have far from a deficit. I am most of the time overstimulated so I hate crowds; and the trauma room because too much info comes at you . I have an above IQ; but still find it difficult to focus on the duldrum of cleaning ; and the most hated task of filling. I think also with so much going on and catching my attentionn if I forget something , lose something it more because I lose the focus of the moment. I can: however and do often focus on thing I need to keep charge of like my patients.
