Attention Surplus Disorder
I've also heard someone suggest it be called Attention Surplus Disorder since those with ADHD are distracted by so many things, that is, they pay too much attention. They can't filter out what is unimportant, except of course when they are in a hyperfocus mode.
It is rather scary when doctors and some educators are so misinformed about ADHD. I met a high school counselor who didn't know adults could have ADHD! She thought only children did. I know of a few situations where a teacher told a parent that their child did not have ADHD, only to find out later that their child did indeed have ADHD. I have reminded parents that teachers are not doctors. Yes, many times a teacher can be helpful in their observations but they are not qualified to diagnose. And the amount of knowledge teachers have on ADHD can vary from one teacher to another.
It is important to find a doctor who is knowledgeable regarding ADHD. There is a difference between knowing about the disorder and understanding ADHD and how to treat it. That's why we travel a distance to see a knowledgeable doctor. it makes a big difference.
