person first language please!!!

I don't know where else to post this... but I work as a sp ed assistant, and one thing that kept coming up was to be respectful when referring to people...which means to recognize that someone is a person FIRST, not the disability/disease/disorder first.

It dries me nuts when people say "your ADHD child". Please. Your child is a child first. Child with ADHD.

The only exception seems to be with the deaf, as they view themselves as having heir own CULTURE.

See the person first.

people with ADHD

You are right. Our doctor frequently corrects others regarding that as well. The person is not ADHD but the person has ADHD. I admit that I sometimes have a tendency to incorrectly make the wrong statement and I know better. Sometimes I do it as a way of using a shortcut when I'm talking or writing. I know it only saves me one word to say person with ADHD instead of he's ADHD. It's a bad habit I have.
