exercise sounds great but...

I hear over and over again how exercise helps management of ADHD (I use the term for both subtypes, as the diagnostic manual uses that term). I think it's awesome. However, for me, it's getting organized to do the exercise that's overwhelming. I'm fairly active, but it's stressful to try and think of everything that has to come together for me to go for a workout! I used to do triathlons, but couldn't get it together enough to do a training program.

Anyone else who can relate? Any suggestions?

I'd love to get into triathlons..more seriously that is. :)

I know what you mean!

I have my gym clothes in a drawer in my office, no excuse, everything I need is right there. But currently, I am just ignoring them. I hope that the warm weather helps. I don't have a gym membership, so I have to face the cold! Somethings that have helped me 1. Meeting a friend to go running. The fear of making my friend angry balances out my leaving work guilt. 2. Doing exercise everyday at the same time. Even if I am to tired from the day before, just going through the motions of getting dressed and out there helped me build the habit. 3. My laundromat does my laundry and folds all my clothes... so my socks are paired and t shirts in one stack. I never ever get anything done if washing something is required. 4. Get a workout partner. I repeat it, because I just remembered, I haven't worked out in 2 years without a partner! And I only do whatever workout is fun. I totally ignore weights and situps ;-)

I wonder if you or anyone has some good ideas for staying hydrated enough while on Amphenamines?

reposting because the 1st once didn't take.

I have a great free full service gym. My desk housed gear (clothes, shoes, makeup). I had No excuses, except it was boring. I only worked out 8 times in 4 YEARS! Being an ‘easily bored’ ADHDer ruled out team sports or jogging around my neighborhood or working out to boot camp DVD at home. SUPER BOREDOM!! I should mention that I refuse to use ‘ear buds’ anymore as I did in the past- because they caused me noticeable hearing loss. On a fluke, I started Tae Kwon Do (Korean martial art) I’m totally addicted to it. It has the variety I crave (each class, instructor, sequence sparring match kick, block, self-defense move is DIFFERENT!) Belts I’ve earned introduce new techniques. I am always challenged- yet never overwhelmed, rushed or scared. Best Part is MY MIND HAS NEVER BEEN CLEAR. The physical activity not only releases my restlessness-But it actually CALMS MY MIND. I don’t struggle with insomnia nearly as much as I used to! Look, if anyone knows busy, it's me. I'm 41, single working mom with 3 children, a demanding job with an elderly mom to take care of as well. I can’t go to TKD every day…The SECOND BEST thing I have found is fast-paced 10-15 minute walk outside (or up 5 flights of indoor stairs). Not enough to get sweaty. However, between the deep breathing and glute work---It works WONDERs clearing my head of the day's distractions. Hope this helps and please share any other good ideas you learn about. - Jackie

A Must Read: "Spark - The Revolutionary Science of Exercise and

It was published last year. I checked it out at the library. Absolutely amazing to read all the scientific proof of how and what kind of exercise actually changes the brain! One study actually showed that exercise was JUST AS EFFECTIVE AS ZOLOFT in depressed patients! There are chapters about learning, anxiety, depression, addictions, ADD & others. It's always hard to start a habit. I'm still working on it. The great thing about it is that when you treat symptoms with exercise, just the act is empowering. I am thankful for modern medications, but there's is that feeling of weakness that comes with it. A must read!!!
