Well, i think you are a good friend. I could see those symptoms a mile away. I am pretty sure he may have ADHD and some other speech or learning disability. You should just say to your friend, (if you are on that level) that you knew of another person who had a child similiar, and they were able to get some help from the school district. Of course, you need to say a lot of positive things first. Like," alex is so silly and fun.He is a pretty busy boy isn't he? Does he ever wear you out? I know this one woman who has a little boy so similiar,but he had some speech issues too. They heard that the district would help with that , so they did a full evaluation on him. They found some attention issues too,and even a speech delay, fine motor delay. But, the best part is he is getting so much intervention even before kindergarten. Isn't that great? If you ever need to look into anything, remember it'll only help and prepare him for the future" OK, you get it. The problem is many daycare and preschool teachers are basically unable to give this kind of diagnosis. Parents are so quick to be defensive, so the care takers have to be very careful when wording anything like that. I am sure once he gets to BIG school, the teacher will notice it and gently let your friend know. But for now, you may have to wait, or say something like I said. Good luck to you and her!!

It's not necessarily ADHD. ADHD kids are not necessarily slow at everything. My son was potty trained by 2.5, had a phenomenal vocabulary by 3. It could be the parents are just not pushing these things on the child. Maybe his temper tantrums are just that and he is not being disciplined. If the doctor is telling her he is normal and the school is not seeng anything, it could really just be a parenting issue. If she is not stressed out about it, I would leave it alone as she has already been to the doctor. If she really felt there was an issue, she would seek more advice. Once he hits kindergarten, if there really is learning deficit issue, the kindergarten teacher will notice it and bring it up. The only thing you might want to suggest as a start, a hearing test....

She sometimes copes with not being able to hear others by pretending to understand and "faking it." I've asked her not to do that with me, and in exchange I try to be clear, on topic, and speak within the context of the conversation. It's a challenge for both of us but we manage with lots of love and a sense of humor.

But occasionally tempers fly after she asks me to repeat myself the umpteenth time, or I raise my voice in an irritated manner when she doesn't hear me after several attempts. I can just imagine how much more difficult a hearing problem would be for a young child (not saying that the friend's child has one, though), especially if they're not aware of it. Everything from learning, to paying attention, to discipline would obviously be greatly affected I imagine.
