1add + 1add = broke
Hubby and I are both ADD. We get board even though we have tons of "toys"....we just go buy another toy and the junk piles up while the bank account dwindles down. We get board of the new thing quickly and move on to the next. We have been getting better about the impulse buying but now we are board out of our minds. Any sugestions. |

fun for the whole ADD family :)
Find ways to have fun that don't cost a lot (or any) money. I'm not sure where you live or what your interests are, but a lot of cities have free art gallery nights, like once a month, where you can visit all the art galleries in town and they serve free appetizers and sometimes even wine. Play basketball at a local playground, or even play on the equipment (in the evening, after the kids have gone home, so you won't look too weird) :) Go on a romantic picnic with candles and flowers... and fast food. Maybe look into volunteering somewhere, my husband has severe ADD and finds that helping other people gets him out of his "me world," where everything is about him, and he actually has fun doing it. I don't know if any of this appeals to you, but constantly buying more stuff isn't going to fill that void, and it's only going to drain your bank account, as I'm sure you already know. Good luck! |

1broke add + 1broke add = whole lot of junk
I can relate -- my hubby is ADHD and although I have never been formally diagnosed I either over compensate for him w/ OCD or I'm really just OCD. Either way - my hubby spends money like it's printed on Monopoly paper... And he changes his interests quickly... How do I keep the house out of foreclosure?? I opened an eBay account... When I see that the hubby is "done" with his toys (much like our son) I sell them on eBay. Sometimes I even turn a profit! |

Never on impulse.
I had the same problem and found this to work best: never buy anything on sight. Ever. You HAVE to go back on another day to buy. Often, I'd totally forget about what ever it was that I HAD to get.... |

impulsive spening and boredom--totally understand
I've had the impulsive spending thing ... didn't realize until recently that I had adhd. So now a lot of it makes sense. One thing you do not say is whether or not you're on medication. Some medications damp down unhealthy impulsiveness. Wellbutrin helps me greatly with impulsiveness. I don't think about chocolate and ice cream every moment of the day and I can get myself to do things I otherwise wouldn't feel like doing--such as exercising. I think the spending addiction (to use the term informally) is a key that you need to find some activities in your life that you really enjoy. It is also a warning that you haven't set up a system of counteracting your adhd impulsiveness and tendency towards distraction. You might want to share more about where you are in general with your adhd treatment and lifestyle changes. I'm not sure you can separate spending from all of that. Good luck. |
