Fidgeting

A lot of people with ADHD do some type of fidgeting. They need to be moving or doing something especially when bored or restless or trying to focus. My daughter would twirl her hair, a friend clicked a pen, my husband shakes his leg (and I find it annoying), some people need to doodle on paper while listening, etc. A doctor with ADHD said he keeps silly putty in his pocket so he has something quiet to fidget with. Try to encourage him to find something he can do that is quiet and not distracting to others. There is a book called, "Fidget to Focus" and it has a lot of ideas on different things individuals with ADHD can do to satisfy the fidgeting need without distracting others.

Fidgeting

I have a 15 year old son with ADD. He does this a lot too and it absolutely drives me crazy. Fact is sometimes he doesn't even know he's doing and he says it helps him to better focus; so it's actually a good thing for "him." At home when we are alone, I politely ask him to stop; we have talked about it though and his other option is to have a small squishy ball. In school he doodles instead but probably does it anyways sometimes and I just never hear about it. He has taken his squishy ball to school to help with this - might try that. But very important, be sure to talk to your child about it at a time with just the two of you so he/she knows that this is not a bad thing just needs to be redirected; we are all different and all of us have quirks. I would also explain that is best to not do it around others too much because it can be annoying to some of us (like me). My son would sometimes keep his squishy ball in his pocket without anyone knowing it; they just have to be doing something with their hands. Not sure what grade your child is in but if it's elementary then the teacher notices more of this and when in middle/high school the teacher doesn't seem to care as much but then the other kids start to be more vocal about it. So in middle/high school there might be other kids in the class that point it out so letting your child know about this now could be bigger motivator for him/her to use a less annoying fidget. As my son has gotten older, he is more aware tries to not do it as much but he still does and probably always will; it's part of his personality and I love him just the same. Hope this helps.

I do it too!

I do it too--and I'm an almost 18 year old girl with ADHD. I started "playing the piano" on everything in 7th or 8th grade. My mom noticed, and it really bugged her. It's gotten a lot better, but I still do it subconsciously, mostly silently so it doesnt really bother anyone. Haha the funny thing is, it bothers me when other people drum!

Beating Drum

This is just a way to release some of the nervous energy many of us ADHD have . It helps us focus . many of us shake oou legs when sitting to long. If it continues maybe you should have him play an instrutment. Many of us love music and it could real in the constant druming . At least it would give him something to do when focusing or jsut plain bored.
