NEED INFORMATION!

I AM HAVING A REAL PROBLEM WITH MY SON'S SCHOOL. MY SON HAS BEEN IN THE SAME SCHOOL DISTRICT SINCE FIRST GRADE. IN THE BEGINNING WORKING WITH THE SCHOOL WAS "EASY". THEY DEVELOPED AN IEP AND REVIEWED AND CHANGED AS NECESSARY. MY PROBLEM NOW IS HE ENTERED MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIS BEHAVIOR AND THE BEHAVIOR OF THE SCHOOL STAFF HAS CHANGED. I RECIEVE SOMETIMES THREE CALLS A DAY FROM DIFFERENT TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS AT HIS SCHOOL REGARDING HIS EPISODES. THIS IS FRUSTRATING FOR BOTH MY SON AND MYSELF. THESE CALLS ARE USUALLY WHEN I AM AT WORK. I HAVE HAD ENOUGH AND CALLED THE SCHOOL BACK TO LEAVE A MESSAGE THAT I CAN NOT RECIEVE THESE NUMEROUS CALLS AT WORK AND THAT MY SON IS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION FOR A REASON AND IF THEY (THE COMPLAINING TEACHERS) DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH IT THEN THEY SHOULDN'T BE IN SPECIAL EDUCATION. I AM AFRAID THAT MY RESPONSE MAY HAVE MADE THINGS WORSE FOR MY SON. THE COMPLAINTS USUALLY ARE THAT HE TALKS TOO MUCH OR HE WONDERS AROUND THE CLASSROOM. LAST INCIDENT WAS THAT MY BOY TOOK A CELL PHONE TO SCHOOL AND WHEN THE TEACHER TOOK IT OFF HIM HE THREW HIMSELF AGAINST THE WALL AND LAID ON THE FLOOR FOR MORE THAT TWENTY MINS. BOBBY HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD EARLY ON IN HIS SCHOOL CAREER AND IT IS KNOWN. AT THIS PRESENT MOMENT HE IS ON A MEDICATION THEREPY ONLY BUT I AM LOOKING INTO A COMBINATION OF MEDS AND BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION FOR HIM. THIS IS WHEN I CAME ACROSS THIS WEBSITE AND FORUM. I HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT THE IEP AND 504 PLAN. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE PLANS??

Hi Tami, 504 is "teachers/administrators" can TRY to follow requests. IEP, by law, they have to follow. You may need to adjust meds, or have a resource room/timeout area for him to go (I call it a safe zone) and it may be the teacher that is pushing some of his behaviors too. Ask if you can sit-in on a day to 'observe' her teaching methods. She should be used to this, they have to do it at least 1x or more whenever they get recertifications. And you should be able to do this anyway being a parent in the district. They actually cannot refuse you the courtesy of observing the teacher or your child in a classroom situation.

Good luck. Remember, as I am being reminded by my family advocate, parents have the power. It's just that we don't know how much because we aren't aware of the proper terms to put school administration to work.

I have found that it helps if you do your own research on how to accomodate your childs needs and help educate the educators. You can do this by researching the articles and advice on this website and the publication ADDITUDE. Not all educators know how to deal with our kids, and it has helped me to make an alliance with them to get your child what they need. Being informed yourself and giving them some additional tools has helped in my situation. Good Luck, Mom on a mission...... P.S. The best offense is a good defense, and you are your childs BEST advocate.......

need answers

Me and My husgband are raising our 9 year old grandson. We have had him all of his life. He has ADD. We moved from Indiana a year ago to Central Ky. The school here is not very good at trying to deal with this issue. So I told them next year I will have a 504 plan in place. In Indiana the school he went to was great I didn't have to have a 504 plan. What I would like to know can I make my own 504 plan myself? Or are there speical form that you have to have? Someone please answer!

Thanks Sunfire
