Pill Swallowing Tactics

My 9 yr old son currently takes Medadate CD because it can be poured into applesauce. This med is wearing off by 3:30 and afternoon/evening activities as he ages are becoming really problematic without a med on board. They do not make a short acting medadate which I could add in afternoons so I am trying to get my son to take Concerta to see if it has longer effectiveness. Problem: My son has a huge phobia for swallowing pills. I have tried all methods of swallowing with a straw, throwing back neck and he just can't. Has anyone had the same problem? What has worked for you to get your child to swallow a pill? Greatly appreciate your help and supportive ideas. BTW: My son is really limited in which meds he can take not just because of the pill swallowing issue but mainly due to severe rebound. I am running out of options unless I can make concerta work.

Swallowing meds

I would also like any ideas someone might have as my 19yr old has not been able to swallow any meds larger than 1/2 a green pea. She gets her meds in liquid form now, and stopped her ADD meds when she as 16. Thank you Elizabeth

learning to swallow a pill

We practiced with mini-M&Ms. We kept working with those until our son was able to completely swallow it. Now he takes his meds like a champ!

Pill Swallowing Update

Well, we got success with the most bizarre solution.......Spaghetti Sauce! After lining up the whip cream, jello and other suggestions I got online and having failed, my husband reached for the marinara sauce our son loves and down it went. After breakfast I now give his med in a tablespoon of warm marinara........odd no doubt but it worked for us.

yummy solution...

When I was younger, my parents used to hide my pills in CoolWhip (thicker consistency than real whip cream). It was a yummy treat and I was able to take medicines in pill form. The key is to swallow the entire spoonful in one gulp. Good luck!

Pill swallowing method

This is a method I read somewhere years ago, tried it on my then 4, yes 4, year old daughter with her allergy medication. Have the child put the pill on the middle of his/her tongue, then drink a Capri Sun as fast as possible. Sucking through that tiny straw forces the pill right down the throat! With my kiddo, after a few weeks of this, we "graduated" to a normal sized drinking straw and water. After a few weeks with that, we tried just a glass of water, drinking it normally, and she was able to swallow the pill perfectly! Fast forward to age 8 1/2 and I am so thankful she can swallow her newly prescribed Ritalin with only a Dixie cup of water, without any issues!

I've had ADULT friends that have seen her take her meds and ask how I got her to do that, that they have issues swallowing pills themselves! After I told them, they've tried it and they can now swallow pills with ease.

I hope this method works for you! Best of luck! :)

pill swallow reward

We switched back to metadate from a trial of the daytrana patch. The main reason for trying the patch was because of the swallowing pill issues but decided daytrana was worse. Out of desperation I offered him a quarter to try and swallow the pill and to both of our surprise he did it. I should probably switch to some kind of marble system so he doesn't lose the quarters and pester me to death to take him to buy legos.
