What does ADHD anxiety look like?
I'm wondering if my almost 11yo son has within 'normal' range worries or whether he qualifies as having an anxiety problem... What's your experience/thoughts? - He doesn't like to be upstairs in his room if no one else is up there (I recently started insisting and he lies awake fearful for quite awhile), usually falling asleep eventually. - He doesn't like new situations if I'm not there (summer camp, out to a movie with an adult friend, etc. - but he's fine going to a new friend's house, etc.) - Can't stand 'performing' (karate demos, small music recitals, team sports, plays, etc.) - He perseverates on something he's concerned about and asks about it one or more times everyday even though the answer has been provided 72 different ways before (when are we getting the new computer? are you sure it will be fast enough? how much more allowance do I have to contribute? etc.) It drives us nuts! It's like he needs constant reassurance that his needs will be met - or is it just his ADHD impulsivity that makes him blurt out his every thought? My ex and I are visiting his prescribing pediatrician and I wanted to get a sense of this before I go. I have to tread very lightly with my concerns since my ex thinks I'm the cause of our son's difficulties. His latest quote: "I don't know why you want to consider changing meds to get longer coverage when what we should be doing is 'breaking the cycle of his dependency on meds"! (Need I say my ex is quite literally disabled by his level of ADHD and refuses to seek help! But I digress entirely... ;-) |

anxiety
Judi, My daughter and I both suffer from ADHD/Anxiety and it sounds like you might be correct about your son. As Elaine stated their are different types of anxiety. My anxiety is different than my daughters but it still goes back to worries, fear stress that interferes with life. We both take medication for the ADHD and the anxiety it helps but it still shows itself occasionally. When I start to feel really anxious OCD appears then a massive migraine surfaces. To where my daughter will bite her nails or while she is sleeping she will bite her tongue or chew on the inside of her mouth. I would talk to my doctor soon if you feel that is what your son may be experiencing. I feel that anxiety is by far worse to deal with than the ADHD. one2risky |

Your Ex.
Judi, I understand how frustrating that must be. It is easy for someone to dismiss or not agree with ADHD/Meds. Especially when they are not the one with the disorder. My advice is keep in mind that you are just trying to help your son manage and live life the best way he can. I was not diagnosed with the ADHD until I was an adult and after I realized my daughter suffered from it. I did a lot of research and her and I both have seen the benefits of medication. I wish that they new more about the ADHD when I was a child, it would have made my childhood alot better. My husband noticed a big difference in me after medication. Picture an adult with ADHD trying to manage a child with ADHD, it was chaois. We still have our struggles but we are very pro meds. Because we have seen the benefits. I personally feel that if you have a disorder and are aware that there are ways to help and you ignore them. You are being irresponsible. one2risky |

anxiety
The behavior you cited sounds like anxiety to me, speaking as someone who suffers from it (along with ADHD). It can resemble obsessive-compulsive behavior, like not wanting to go upstairs, of it could be OCD instead. Like anxiety, OCD is more common in people with ADHD. The constant asking sounds like it could be both impulsivity and anxiety. I think the anxiety with ADHD comes from the mind always racing, and rapidly imagining all the things that could go wrong. |

It is possible that your child may have been misdiagnosed. Look at this site...www.SPDNetwork.org SPD is Sensory Processing Disorder. This is very similiar to ADD and ADHD. A lot of places diagnois children with ADD and ADHD and so on , when it is really a sensory problem. There are a few different types of sensory disorders. Take a look and see what you think. Also, be very careful of what medications are perscribed. Research them well, some may cause possible future disease problems. Hope this helps! |

Hello everyone, I just joined and glad there is support for adults with ADD. I completed testing about 2 years ago with confirmation of ADD and possible LD. I am a social worker completing my masters degree and REALLY struggling. I strugged all through undergrad but did make honours. I feel like a child again in this Masters degree, unable to "keep up with my classmates" - heard that all through grade/secondary schools. I am seeing my MD next week for a perscription (Concerta). I happen to be one of "those" individuals that believe our children are over medicated (mine is grown...does not have ADD or LD thankfully :-) she is very supportive of me). Katie thank you for your valuable input with this website SPDN newtwork. I am going to check it out and I believe your cautionary note concerning meds is very important. It is not my intention to offend anyone with my beliefs about meds perhaps once I am on a regular med routine myself (combined with behaviour modification) and see positive results (especially for grad school) I will understand more. I have learned in life; things are not usually as we perceive them to be...take care everyone, thanks for being here. Sprout

ADHD and ODD (Opositonal Difiant Disorder)
My daughter was off of Concerta for a year and a half. From fifth grade to sixth. During the past six months she has absolutly done a 360 with her attitude and emotions. The whole family is suffering. This Monday we took her to our doctor who prescribed the Concerta. She went back on them. Did not complain. Said she may have some ODD. Has anyone ever suffered from both. She has just turned 13 on Thursday. She has not begun her period. Could this be harmones? What do you think. She is more calmer but still has an attutude. She was pacing the floor and has not done that since she was in Kindergarten. Also she gets so involved with the computer. Does anyone feel their teen gets that way? What are your teenage daughters symptoms???? Do you have any suggestions? Thanks Brenda |
