public school district was great
(This is my third attempt to post---my screen keeps disappearing---so I hope this is the first to come through and not a nuisance.)
This is my experience as a parent.
Our local district was insightful, caring, capable and remain ready to assist. We learned a lot and they helped us come up with a 504 plan with our parish school. Our principal was more receptive than we had expected but the teachers are limited in some ways. Parental vigilance---courteous but constant--- is necessary, as it is even in public school. (I'm on the site preparing for review/reminder/encouragement meetings with teachers.)
Call your district. In our state (NY)---I'm not sure if it's a federal requirement--- they have to get the application process and testing going in a certain number of days.Our doctors encouraged us to take advantage of the district testing because it's the same as the initial testing we'd pay for---and probably have to wait for-- with private services. I know an IEP is more involved than a 504, but the professionals know what can or can't be done with public school involvement. I hope this is somewhat helpful /encouraging. I hope your school district is as capable and caring as ours. Good luck.
