Anger issues at home

My 9 year old son was diagnosed 2 years ago with ADD and is currently on Concerta (extended). He tries his best at school and holds his own, he has no social problems with other children, except he is extremely forgiving. Our main trouble with him, is his anger, especially towards his 5 year old sister. Yes, siblings are annoying, but he stretches it. He could be playing alone in his room or outside and get hurt or angry and dilberatly seek her out to hit her. Just tonight, they were playing wonderfully, laughing and then she hit him by accident and it ended up he bite her. She got him back, harder too, but it's like he's a time bomb and I never know when he's going to explode. His doctor said it seems he is using all his focus and energy at school and has nothing for home. He really is a great kid and we certainly don't live in fear or anything, I just don't know how to help him. We can't afford therapy and are on a waiting list for a state provided program and we certainly try to breathe deep and relax. Easier said than done. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Kim

Anger Issues

I don't know if this is going to help, but it helped my son with his explosive anger to get him into activities such as Karate. The disipline that he learned was great. The self control was awsome. He isn't in it anymore he did reach his second degree senior black belt and assist instructors certificate. Their are other sports you can try. I hope that this helps a little at least.

here too

Oh if only I could afford to send my four to karate or whatever my brother does with his son. I am so considering even sending my oldest through the JrROTC program at the junior high. Anger.... oh boy... yeah been there done that have the Tshirt and own stock in it... four times over. Between my husband and three kids with problems with anger and emotions it's like the next nuclear bomb just ticking away at my house. I have two though in baseball but I cannot get my oldest interested in anything. So I am waiting to either win the lotto or find someone in my family kind enough to pay for my kids to go into something that can channel their emotions and let them learn some more discipline and consistency and control.

Anger

Oh yes, I know about anger control issues. My son and I have a problem with it. I put my son into Karate and it was the best thing for him. Self control, dissipline and much more than I expected. He is now 20 yrs old and continues to have self control.

Me, I went to therapy for a couple of years before the consequences started to affect my behavior. I stuck it out though and it was really worth it.

jr ROTC would really be good. They have to answer to and take responsibility for the grades they make also. Anger issues can be delt with if done early enough. It will be easier for them to respond to discipline in the future.

We have a good psychiatrist

I understand how you feel. Our 10 year old was diagnosed with Asperger's and ADHD 5 years ago. He was on a hairtrigger to violence until we got the right medication. He's now on daily prozac, risperdal (3x) and adderall. The risperdal made a HUGE difference and just takes the edge off the anger. It's allowed him to develop better overall behavior and monitor himself since he has a few seconds to think before clobbering his sister or throwing something. He can even apologize and mean it without being prompted. Maybe someday he'll outgrow the need for medication, but for now it works very well in his biochemistry.
