What to do when hyperfocus seems to bet worse on meds

Both my daughter and I find at some doses of adderall we get hyperfocused on a necessary activity that needs to be, doesn't take much thought like cleaning, and often find it hard to stop and do more important things. I remembered hyperfocus episodes before meds, but it was usually very interesting, not boring and mindless like housework!

Hyperfocus

It can be very bad to hyperfocus when it starts interfering with our daily activities. What I can suggest is make a list of things that need to be done and start on that list. That is what I do.

Way to Escape

Most of the time, I feel the "negative" hyperfocusing I do on mundane tasks is a way of either not wanting to start/continue doing a higher priority task or of taking an ADD-necessary mental break from that task. Block out the time you will allow yourself to devote to the mundane task, and stop once the alarm that you set for ending that block of time rings. STOP no matter where you are on it (it's better than it was after what you did, if not, plan it differently next time). If you feel you'll forget something about that task if you don't continue, write it down on your day's planner. Good luck.

Hyperfocus

I've heard that hyperfocus can get worse if medication is too high. My son (19 years old) has his daily dose broken up into two doses, the larger amount in morning and the smaller in afternoon. (Ex: instead of 40 mg daily, do 30 in morning and 10 in afternoon.) That may help. Good Luck.
