10 yo Switching from Adderal to Strattera

We're considering switching (10 yo son with ADHHHD!) from a successful course of Adderal XR to Strattera to get fuller coverage and eliminate need for an afternoon dose when he starts at the middle school next fall. There are a lot of adults who are reporting scary experiences here but I've also read elsewhere of a lot of successes. I've also heard people say Strattera's not so good at controlling the hyperactivity/ impulse stuff, which is a key area for us. Do you have a child who has switched? What do you think?

switching to Strattera

My 9 yo son has been on Adderall for 8 months now, after having been on every ADHD med there is, and now we are trying Strattera. He had a lot of aggression with the Adderall. He started on a 10 mg dose, and is now on 20 and will get reevaluated in a week. The aggresssion is much better, the hyperactivity is controlled for the most part, but he still has some impulsivity. He had the best day at school yesterday he has had all year. Completing his work load. I am hoping this is a good move. Let me know how your son does.

Strattera

My 10 yr old (who was diagnosed with ADHD at age 5 and Aspergers at age 8) has tried almost every medication out there. Our experience has ranged from horrible to average on every med we've tried (from Ritalin to adderal to adderal XR to concerta) until I finally did a lot of research myself and talked to alot of people who had similar issues as my son - temper tantrums, depression, anxiety, etc. After being on the meds six months (we kept taking the Concerta along with the Straterra until I felt he was ready) we've seen remarkable results. He still has bad days (don't we all) but nothing like before. His doctor was hesitant to try but felt I knew my son best and has been blown away with the change in his demeanor and general behavior. His teachers have noticed an increase in his participation (rather than sitting there stoned all day which is what the stimulants did), a happier child overall and he is getting his work done. I would caution everyone to try the medication for at least 6 months before deciding how it works. I would also advise that you work your way up from a low dose much more slowly than the doctors recommend. We take 40mg now but I think we could have made it with a lower dose, I just didn't wait long enough to see. Adults on this med say it may take a long time to really notice big changes and since they are more able to articulate how a med is working I would listen to them before the doctors.
