8 year old daughter just diagnosed ADHD and starting Straterra

My 8 year old daughter was just diagnosed with ADHD and just started taking Straterra this week. Does anyone have a child who has been taking Straterra that can give some feedback on what to expect with this medication? Thank you.

1 week later

She's been taking Staterra for just over a week now. The first few days were a battle to get her take the pill but she's doing much better now. I have not seen any visible change in her but understand it can take up to 6 weeks to make an assessment. If anyone has been through this with their child, I'd appreciate knowing how it worked. Thanks.

My 8 year old is on Strattera

My son has been on Strattera since 4/12/08. I am seeing some improvements. On his contract at school he used to get a 6 or 7 and now he is getting 9 and 10's. The teacher used to always write on it that he was chatty or didn't raise his hand, etc. But now she writes good notes. I still have some issues like his tantrums but we are getting somewhere I think.

our experience

my daughter started strattera in may. school was out before we could really see if it was helping but she was starting to do a bit better. i dont really notice a difference at home, but we have had a very busy summer full of lots of changes. shes been tired and cranky but this could be due to the busy summer. we have spent a lot of time camping and even i find myself more tired because of this. i will have to wait and see what the new school year brings. she was on concerta before but that caused her to have severe, frequent tantrums, this is not.

Try Vyvanse

My son's best friend was on Straterra and showed very little improvement, in fact it increased his anxiety and he started pulling his hair out. I suggested to his mom that they try Vyvanse (which is a stimulant). My son has been on it for about 4 months and it has been a life changing experience. He has experienced no negative side affects and has gone from getting Cs and Ds to being an honor roll student. Absolutely AMAZING!! My son's friend is now off of Straterra and taking Vyvanse and is doing much better. His anxiety is less and he is really improving in school. My son, who is much taller than his friend is on a dosage of 30MG of Vyvanse where his friend who is shorter and weighs less is taking 70MG of Vyvanse. Everyone is different....if you don't see any improvement let your doctor know...don't be afraid. Per my son's pediatrician, treating ADD/ADHD is not an exact science so they depend on the parents and more importantly the patient's feedback. Good luck, I hope your daughter has the same success my son has....Vyvanse has made my son a more confident person and for the first time EVER he was so happy and proud to show me me his report card.
