Do all ADHD meds take the fun out of the kid?

Looking for parents help!!! My son is 7 1/2 and has ADHD. We still haven't quite figured out if its truly combination type, but it def. is heavy on the hyperactivity, impulsivity type. He is currently on Concerta 54mg. It does help with the ADHD symptoms... he is doing well at school, able to concentrate more on reading and in sports, and can follow directions without getting too off track. BUT... it seems like all the fun of his personality goes away on the meds. He wakes up happy, singing, loving, laughing. An hour after taking meds, he seems so flat... anxious, no laughing, hardly any smiling, nervous. Is that a trade off that we have to make, or does this seem to be a wrong meds or wrong dosage issue?

No fun

I do not feel that medication should take the fun out a child. My 7 yr old son experianced the same thing on several meds and I wasn't going to stand for it. We have decided that Stimulants are not agreeing with him and going to try Tenax tonight as a matter of fact. Follow your heart and if you are not happy with your childs lack of enthusiasm then keep looking. Good luck !

Switch Meds!!

This was exactly what happened with my son when he started taking medication for ADHD (at 6 years old, he's now almost 8). The lower dose of Concerta wasn't controlling all his ADHD issues, but the a 54mg dose really took so much of personality away. He just seemed withdrawn and didn't smile too much anymore. If I asked him what was wrong, he's say "Nothing, I'm fine"...although his ADHD symptoms were under control, it just wasn't worth the trade-off. So, we switched to Adderall and things were much, much better! Although he still gets in trouble once in a while at school, it's not excessive and typically just normal boy stuff. I'm not looking for a perfectly obedient child...all I hope for is that he can focus on schoolwork while maintaining the ability to play with friends and be happy/enjoy life. But I should also mention, that although things got a lot better on Adderall, we've still had to adjust dosages, and even add in some other meds - one to further increase his ability focus/decrease impulsivity, and another to help with the eating/sleeping side effects (he got very very thin and his growth seemed to be slowing). It's still not perfect...but we may be getting closer??? I'm always hopeful. Dealing with medications has been very challenging/frustrating for me and it always seems we are having to tweak or change some med in order to keep them effective, while minimizing the side effects.

Eliza, I was wondering what meds your child took for appitite. I have a child who has a growth disorder and adhd on focalin now and we are going to the xr soon. I cannot afford for him to loose any weight... He needs every ounce.
