LCC, my story is somewhat similar to yours.
After my Dx, my doc wanted to try Stattera first. It simply gave me "malaise" (a vague or unfocused feeling of mental uneasiness, lethargy, or discomfort). I went onto Concerta but had a problem with headaches.
About a year ago I started Adderall XR and it has proved to be nearly perfect! My dose was either 2 or 3 (20 mg XR) capsules in the morning [depending on the time of year or time of the month] with a 10 mg (regular) in the midafternoon. I took this "afternoon booster" as I work long hours and the XR didn't quite last long enough. I didn't crash like I did on Concerta, but my brain seemed to just turn off gradually. I would be going through paperwork and I couldn't think of a common word. I typically feel comfortable asking people "what is the word that means...?" But in the afternoon, the words would be very simple. Like: "what is the word for that thing you clean up dust, has a long handle...?" Duh... a broom!
I recently switched to non-XR Adderall completely as my insurance no longer covers XR (it does but the co-pay is more than I can handle). I was afraid... but it has been a couple of months and I've found my routine. I take 40 mg in the morning, 20 mg at lunch-ish and 10 mg in the afternoon.
If I take the afternoon dose too late (evening), I have a hard time shutting off no matter how tired I am... my brain keeps going.
