My Experience

Hello everyone, I'm new to ADDitude but found all the information very helpful. I thought I would say hi and tell you a little about my story, what has worked, and where I'm stuck. I have 6 kids (12, 7, 7, 6, 1, and 0). One son age 7 is my step son and he has ADHD and is on a 504 at school. He's also very asthmatic so there are medical complications there. Although I'm the step dad, I'm the most active parent in his day to day life which I love.

We've gone through a lot of meds. Right now we're on Daytrana 20mg patches which are a godsend. He's night and day different on his patch. I highly recomend this medicine, except... The poor kid has no appetite what so ever. I have to feed him late at night hours after the meds are gone. We take the patch off when he's home around 3:30 every day and by 8:30 he's hungry. He's only about 40lbs now at age 7.

Here is the catch and I can't find any articles that really help. If he eats late, which has almost has to, he's up forever. Even without a late nigh meal he can rarely fall asleep before 11. All the other kids (including the oldest) are fast asleep long before that because the house wakes early. So he really never gets enough sleep then makes really bad "choices" in the morning.

Mornings really suck most days. He does the most crazy things. Today, he decided he hates milk and spit it all over the kitchen. A few days ago he was climbing in the bathroom sink smearing toothpaste all over. We do have a rewards system all the kids participate in and now his school also gives him "points". We have a prize bucket which works like a store and all this is great except most often he doesn't care about the prizes because he doesn't seem to think about them until the other kids cash in, then he's crazy upset that he doesn't have the points. We've tried "sentances" which worked well for about 6 months. They calmed him down and for a few days he remembered he doesn't like them. Now he simply won't write them, tears paper, etc..

During the school day when the meds are really working he does excellent. He's above grade level in virtually every subject and causes mostly no problems at all.

Nice to meat ya'll, it's been interesting reading everyones story and tips.

My son also has had trouble with sleep and is on concerta. His Doctor gave him a presciption for clonidine. This has been very effective in getting him to sleep. The bonus is it also stimulates his appetite and is a antihypertensive so there isn't the problems associated with adult sleep meds. Dan

response to bpaz

Wow, are you sure you don't have a clone of my son? Mornings are a challenge at my place, too. My son wakes up on the wrong side of the bed most days or switches from Dr. Jekel to Mr. Hyde for no reason at all. I try to keep the same routine every morning but sometimes that doesn't work. When it gets really bad, I make him go back to his room and start all over again. Yes, it takes time and is frustrating but there has to be some kind of consequence. I wonder if he could drink some Mountain Dew or hot chocolate with a little bit of instant coffee in it to get some stimulant in him before the his meds are given. I'm thinking of starting that with my son and will let you know what happens.

Meds needs

Dear bpaz It sounds to me that your 7 yo could benefit from a late afternoon dose or half dose., say about 4 pm......getting through the evening calmly will set him up better for the next day. I find this myself as an adult and I'm sure it would have helped me when I was 7 !!! If any one had known what was the matter. Instant rewards may be better in tandem with saving up for a bigger prize.........I know I would never have been able to think that far ahead as a child and I still have to channel my impulsiveness at 47. Same problem

We had the same problem you are having. Our Dr. told us to try something and yes it was a pain to wake up an hour before I had to but I would wake up at 5:00 and go ahead and apply the patch to our son before his wake up time of 6:00 and by the time he woke up he was already getting some of the medicine so it helped out in the morning and we took it off at 3:30 every day also, w/ our son he would not eat dinner either so we made him have at least 1 healthy snack when we were eating dinner. (carrotts and ranch and apple yogurt.) It seemed to help him get more in the mood to eat and then after dinner was being put away he was ready to eat. Just something to try it worked for us!

i would love to try zinc and fish oil for my daughter. i worry about the high dose of medication that she is on (and how it seems to have changed her personality when not on). are these alternatives in liquid or capsule form? my daughter does not yet swallow a pill. how do i get her to take these? thanks

A great zinc supplement we have found is Zinc-Ease lozenges by Carlson Laboratories (www.carlsonlabs.com). We get them at our local health food store. They are 10mg lozenges that are very mild flavored (bottle says they contain natural lemon flavor, but they aren't sour at all), easy to suck on, like a piece of candy. My 3 year old sucks on them, then chews them up when they get thin, and the older kids suck on them until they dissolve. Directions say to avoid other vitamins, food or beverages other than water within 20 minutes of taking the zinc. From my own experience, if you take one on a totally empty stomach, you can feel a little nauseous, so I give them to them about an hour after a meal. The tablet will also dissolve very slowly in a spoonful of water if needed. We began this 10 years ago with our oldest child as a treatment for severe eczema in the winter months(still works great for it and she needs no expensive prescription creams) and have been trying it with our 10 year old son w/ADD. Can't tell yet if it works for him for attention issues, but it does help his eczema tremendously too. The older kids take about 3 per day, and 3 year old one per day (for eczema).
