Have Side-effects from Vyvanse?

Hi, I'm new here having just joined today. This seems like a GREAT resource here!

I'm 32 and was diagnosed probably about a year ago with ADD--the inattentive kind. I started taking Adderall XR in September, and currently I take 30mg/day. I'm doing better with that overall, but my psychiatrist recommended I give Vyvanse a try instead. She gave me a slip for 50mg a day, which I haven't filled yet.

Looking up the Vyvanse info on their own website gave me their "official" info, but I wanted to ask any of you about your own first-hand experiences taking this med. I read somewhere that people have had odd side-effects: Clenching jaw, tics, and "chewing on tongue." I'm a little hesitant about trying this after hearing about those...just wondering if any of you have experienced any of these? Also, how irritable do people feel while taking it?

Thanks! Amy

Vyvanse

I take Vyvanse. Actually all of the stimulant meds can give you those side effects that you mentioned.I have been on Vyvanse since July 2007, that is when it first went on the market. So far I have had no side effects. I am getting great results with this med, but when you first start taking it I have heard of some children having a little dizziness or nausea. Both went away after a few days. I didn't have these. I find it easier to organize, my attention span is great now, my impulsivity is well controlled. I hope that this helped you.

Vyvanse

I think all you can do is try it and see how it works for you. Our son tried it and it quickly became clear that he is one of the minority who cannot take Vyvanse (and likely other meds in the same family). We tried it for him because so far, it seems to be the only real 12-hour medication and he hates taking medicine at school. However, he became angry, aggressive, anxious, etc., primarily at home. We were all miserable. We went back to his prior medication and he did a 180 degree turnaround. We talked with the psychiatrist who prescribes his medication and she said most of her patients on Vyvanse are doing great but there is a small percentage who cannot tolerate it very well. Good luck.

sleeping issues

Thanks for the replies above.

I started the Vyvanse last Friday, so today's my 5th day on it. Aside from being a tiny bit dizzy at times, I feel fine.

One weird thing, though, is that I'm not sleeping as well as I usually do. I've been waking up many times during the night, and I don't remember that happening before. I've been waking up to any noise in the middle of the night, and then I start thinking about stuff...it's not anxiety, just that my mind seems to want to be active at times when the rest of me just wants to sleep! lol

I think I MIGHT be able to focus my thoughts a little better, so I'm not as overwhelmed...but I'm not sure yet how this is working for me. Does it take a while for this med to be effective? A couple weeks or so?

Any thoughts anyone has about their experience on Vyvanse would be appreciated. :)

Thanks! Amy

Vyvanse

My daughter who is 15 switched from Adderall XR to Vyvanse at first she said she didn't see any difference. She metabolizes the meds quickly.( she was having to take meds at school and was on a high dose of Adderall XR and the fast acting) So we thought we would give the Vyvanse a try. So far so good. She has been taking it for a month. The past few nights she has stated waking up and not being able to go back to sleep. She suffers from ADHD/Anxiety/Insomnia so she takes medicine at night to help her sleep anyway. I am going to continue to watch this because it could be a side effect. Especially since she takes medicine to help with insomnia and is waking up and not being able to go back to sleep.

Vyvanse rebounding

My 10 yr old daughter just started taking meds for her ADHD. I have ADD and have been taking Vyvanse since last Sept, with great results. Definitely more irritable than usual, but the only ADD meds I've tried that have not given me bad side effects.

We noticed a positive change in my daughter right away, but when she took a full dose (30mg) she had such horrible rebounding, she cried and carried on for 2 hours straight.

She had all the positive benefits but with all the negative side effects. Dr. switched her to Metadate CD (10mg) and we don't have any side effects, but also don't see nearly as many positive changes.

Any suggestions???

Vyvanse and Rebound

My son, 8, is on the 50mg. He has been taking it for almost 2 weeks (first 15 mg for 2 weeks, then 30mg for 3 weeks, now 50mg after we went for the doc exam and my son was on the rolling stool-back and forth-for the entire exam). Rebound is no fun. The one to two hours afterwards is difficult. He is aggitated and combative (he is ODD comorbid, with the A and the H in ADHD). The only time I noticed that the transition was fine was when we were at his sister's evening softball game and he was "calling" the game at the backstop. Always moving and occupied. The ride home was calm and, I dare say, pleasant!

Maybe having him do a physical activity during the transition will help. I'm also hoping the meds mellow. I'm hoping the rebound mellows after a while on the medication. I've read where it can take up to a couple of months for all of the sides to mellow..

He also has a very restricted appetite and it is hard for him to go to sleep. As far as him waking up and not going back to sleep, no. He does talk in his sleep, though.

Vyvanse side-effect

My son is 9yrs. old and recently was switched from 30mg Aderall XR to Vyvanse. He also takes 300mg Trileptal twice a day for mood swings. He is on 70mg (max dose) and I've noticed that about 20 to 30 min. after he takes his medication he becomes extremely agitated and defiant. Although it is not always the case, I would say 9 out of 10 times he has this adverse reaction. After about one hour, he settles back down and has a pretty good day. I'm concerned for two reasons: It makes the mornings a nightmare and being on 70mg already leaves no room for medication adjustments. Has anyone had similar symtoms? What could be causing this agitated state?

Dd doing good on Vyvance

Hi...

My daughter is 6 and started Vyvance in October. Vyvance was our 3rd medicine we tried. Ritalin made her hallucinate and Adderall made her mean and nasty and loud.

Since starting the Vyvance 30mg, there has been so much change in dd. Her grades at school have jumped from C's& D's to A's. In the beginning, she did rebound on some days but now there is no sign of rebound. I can not tell when she takes her medicine or when it wears off. It is so smooth. She has made friends, she can focus and pay attention and stay in her seat. Her teachers were surprised at how smart she is because it wasn't coming through before. They were considering placing her back in Kindergarten but I said I wanted to try the meds first. She even noticed the medicine helping her when she was able to cut out a flower for art and did not get frustrated becasue she did not cut directly on the line. Dd also has OCD. This medicine has helped both of those conditions. At first she had a few stomach aches and headaches, but now, she does not. The only side effects "I" think I see is some senory such as picking her nose (have a hard time finding the right allergy medicine with the meds) smoothing her hair, cold hands and feet or waiting to long to go to the bathroom. She has never had an accident but when she has to go, it always appears as if it's urgent. Her doctors feel her sensory is NOT related to the medicine, that this is something else she has developed, SI. We will not know for sure until I take her off the medicine for the summer. She has also not gained much weight but did grow height wise.

During K year, I tried everything. Homeopathic medicines, allergy testing, vitamins and minerals, taking out sugar in foods, colorings, preservatives, etc. Nothing helped her as much as the Vyvance. When a 6 year old wants to take her medicine and can notice the difference, that was an eye opener to me.

My dd came out of K saying she was stupid and dumb. Kids were picking on her. She is now in 1st grade and has so many friends. She no longer calls herself stupid and no she is emerging as a leader her teacher tells me. She is one of the 3 smartest kids in her class.

What a change....

Thanks Vyvance!

Vyvanse side effects adult male

I started taking Vyvanse 50mg on Mon. Felt fine, focused, not speedy, a little trouble sleeping but not too bad. On Tues. though I noticed something quite unpleasent. While my wife and I were intimate I had trouble keeping a full erection. Needless to say as a healthy, fit, 31yr old man with a "smokin' hot wife" this was cause for concern. So I haven't taken the Vyvanse for two days and the problem went away. Is this a typicall side effect of the drug? I can't find anything of their official site.

Tics

My 9yr old son started Vyvanse a couple of months ago. It is working wonders with the ADHD, but he has developed a host of tics since he started taking it. First it was problems with his eyes (blinking, squinting, etc). Now he is constantly clearing his throat and making jerking type movements. The Dr. swears that it is common for kids with ADHD to have tic disorders, but he never had one before. The Dr. is also sure it is not the Vyvanse causing it. If it wasn't working so well for the ADHD I'd pull it immediately, but he's doing SO much better. Anyone else having problems w/ Vyvanse and tics?

vyvanse on 8 yr old

My daughter is on vyvanse 50 mg, i do not give her the whole capsule we open it and pour in a cup of water, a little more than half.. we tried adderall first and saw nothing but dry mouth. i am alos having alot of side effects with her though. she has been on it for about 9 weeks, she has lost alot of weight, has a pretty suppressed appetite and extreme mood swings and angry and hostile. but in school she has shown major improvement in self control, and outbursts. i do not notice this at all at home on the weekends however. so im not sure what else to do, change medication again? add something for mood swings. i also notice when it wears off around 4 every day, she is almost worse than before the meds... so ya i notice alot of improvement in school, not at home and alot of side effetcs... does anyone have these problems, do u add other meds/??? thanks soo much

vyvanse/ concerta

I am 34 yrs old and just started taking vyvanse 20mg. I do think that it can make you very jittery. I try to take it after my coffee has metabolized. I do think that it's helped me, my house is organzied and clean and I seem to be focused much better.

My son who is 10 has struggled in school with focusing since he started, so I decided to speak with the docter about it. We did all of the paper work and had his teacher do the same. The dr. placed him of concerta for ADD as he did not show the signs of being "busy". My dr. placed hime on the 18mg and it has been amazing! My niece who is 13 also takes it and has recently moved to 36mg. It is like night and day at home and at school. It also works immediatly. My son sat and read 7 chapters in one sitting with me!!!

I would ask your Dr. about concerta especially if the patient is diagnosed with ADHD. The biggest side effect in concerta is drowsiness. The vyvanse has a stimulant in it and can cause much enerygy. I hope this helps.

Vyvanse Side Effect

I was diagnosed about a year ago with adult inattentive ADHD. Vyvanse is the only medication I've ever taken. I love that it helps me stay really focused for most of the workday. In that regard, it has really changed my life (along with a great ADHD coach!) However, I have been frustrated with the dry mouth side effect. The severity seems to be directly connected to hormone cycles, i.e., during the middle of the month, almost without fail, I get mouth sores. I have tried a few different OTC treatments for dry mouth, but have not found one that works well. I'd consider trying another med, but the Vyvanse works so well, the benefit at this point still outweighs the aggravating side effect. But I would love to know if anyone else has found an effective way to deal with the dry mouth thing.

hair loss?

Hi I was just diagonosed over the summer with add. I am 37. At first I took ritilin and have now swiched to Vyvanse. I have been experiencing hair loss over the last few months. This is listed as a rare side effect to ritilin, I have been on the vyvanse now for about a month--still loosing hair. Does anyone know if this is also a side effect of Vyvanse? To a person earlier I also have been severely clenching my jaw--it started with the ritilin and continues with the vyvanse, I am trying an antidepressant and just started anti anxiety meds to see if it will help the clenching.

addshv1,

I am a 35 y.o. male and have been searching the web for posts like yours. My experience has been identical. Glad to hear I am not alone. The official drug information notes impotence in less than 2% of the trials. I guess we are special. Lucky us.

As for the other side effects I have experienced; jaw clenching (thought it was a new stress response until I found other had it as well) and major insomnia! I have been taking a morning dose of 50mg with some noticeable improvements and better sleep than with Adderall XR. For some reason I started taking an evening dose of Vyvanse as per the the docs recommendation. Why on earth would you prescribe an evening dose of a stimulant with a 12 hour efficacy period to a guy who switched to the drug because of INSOMNIA? I was good and tried it for a few days despite continued lousy sleep. I skipped it two nights because I had a nasty cold and wanted to take Nyquil (I ain't no pharmacist, but didn't want mix up some weird cocktail) After the two best nights of sleep in my life and kicking the cold, I did my duty and took the evening dose. I will not do that again. 1 1/2 hours of sleep does not make for a happy boy. I never thought I would be the guy to have to wake up with a stimulant, pop a Viagra to party and finish the day with sleeping pills. This realization left me sobbing in bed a 5:30 am today.

I think it is time for a new path. I miss the well-rested, hyper focused, distractible me. I am off to get my old self back. Now, if I could only remember where I put my damn keys.......

Vyvanese Rebound

My 13 year old son switched from Concerta to Vyvanese about 12 weeks ago. He experiences post dose rebound on both Concerta and Vyvanese but different rebounds. on Concerta he became very agitated (even nasty) but this may be exacerbated by his being ravenous when he comes off the Concerta. The Vyvanese worked well but the post dose rebound effect was that he felt claustriphobic and lathargic. The problem is that it wore off towards the end of the school day. He had mentioned this during the semester but the actual impact become apparent when his report card came in. The report card was reflective of the post dose rebound in that he had good grades and comments from his teachers about excellent attentiveness and participation for the first 2/3 of the day but the opposite for his last two periods, which coincide with when the time of the post dose rebound. We discussed increasing his dose with our doctor, thinking it might last longer. The doctor said that it would not last the day and that the rebound would be worse.

Vyvanse and my 7 year old grandson

My grandson is 7 years old and has been on Vyvanse for 6 months now. He was left back in first grade and is repeating it this year, so at the start of this school year the doctor put him on Vyvanse (20 mg) each morning. He was on no medication prior to Vyvanse. The great thing is he went from failing in school last year to A honor roll this year! He likes school and will bring up topics for discussion because he wants to learn now. The bad, and in my opinion horrible thing about him on Vyvanse is his weight loss. He was always a small framed child to begin with, and started out at 68 pounds. He is now 56 pounds, and just got over the flu where he lost 2 more pounds. He has NO appetite while on the medication. By the time he gets off the school bus at 4 p.m. he is hungry, but would not have eaten a thing at school for lunch, so he is running on his oatmeal or eggs for breakfast at 6: 30 a.m. all day! Even when he does eat, it is not enough to make up for his loss of appitite so he just keeps losing weight.

We give him a 'holiday' from his pills by not giving them to him on weekends or any time there is no school. When he is off the pill he can almost eat you out of house and home which is wonderful, but no matter how much he eats on the weekends it is not enough to make him gain weight. His pediatrician now put him on a generic for Periactin because he said it will make him hungry and have an appetite again (1 pill a day 4 mg).

It is just so sad. Aggression, or bad behavior has never been part of his symptoms of ADHD, just his attention in class, being able to focus and his inability to take a test on his own without someone standing over him to keep him on track. The Vyvanse has cured him of that but the side effect of weight loss is too much. He is very thin. He just started the appitite meds a couple of days ago, so his mom is hoping this helps. If not, he will have to come off the medication. I am searching for some alternative approaches with vitamins and diet to hopefully build his body wieght back up so he can stay on the meds. Any help anyone can offer about putting weight back on him would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

tics as side effect

I know that stimulants can aggravate tics. Our son (ADHD) had facial and throat clearing tics off and on, but then they went away for months. I sighed a sigh of relief again. Anyway, tried him on a stim. for focus/attention and the tics immediately came back with a vengeance- very alarming for us. So, I know that there is a connection. We took him off immed. and the tics magicly disappeared. I know the stim. brought them back. Now that leaves us with a dilemma. Do we try another stim. or will nothing work?

vyvanse experience

My daughter and I have both tried vyvanse and couldn't tolerate it. My daughter got horrible rebound on it to the point where she would become inconsolable and scream and cry, very scary. I loved Vyvanse personally but had to discontinue when I developed an allergic reaction. After upping the dose from 20mgs to 30mgs I developed a systemic rash. I am currently finishing a prednisone round before we try Adderall XR. No fun not being medicated. I liked the Vyvanse because it didn't really feel like I was on anything yet my ADD symptoms were decreased. I also had no rebound on it. My daughter seems to do well on the Daytrana patch. I'm allergic to that one as well.

Vyvanse side-effects/tolerance

Hello there, I am new to this forum. I am the mother of two ADHD children who have taken everything from Adderall to Vyvanse to Dexedrine. The main thing that I was concerned with was the tolerance that Josh and Anthony were building to the medication. Our doctor mentioned magnesium as a starter, but this did not have a measurable effect. A family member who is a nutritionist recommended a product called Ampheta-Restore. It is compiled of all natural ingredients and seemed to be legit enough. Josh and Anthony have been taking 2 to 3 pills with each does of Vyvanse and we have noticed a difference. The crash off their medication has decreased greatly and they said they can feel the effects longer throughout the day. Have any of you tried any supplements like this? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Ampheta-Restore

I ended up trying Ampheta-Restore for my children and noticed a big difference. I have noticed a definite increase in terms of their tolerance to the medication as well as other things I was noticing such as moodiness and fatigue. I just thought I would share this information because this stuff seems to be a significant help.

Vyvanese ticks

I also have ticks from Vyanese. If the doctor tells you that the ticks are not caused by medication, this is not the truth. I am a 40 year old woman and I never had ticks before in my life, but a few weeks into taking Vyvanese I developed them. As soon I stoped taking the medication, the ticks disappeared. Also, regarding the erection problem, this is also caused by medication. Women taking stimulans don't have sexual side-effects, but man do. I've been now taking Synaptol for 3 years and I've been very happy. This is a natural medication for ADHD. I have no side effects and as far as I am concerened it works as well as prescribed medication. I would just want to tell everybody that this a very good alternative to prescribed medication. And it really works!
