Boredom when Medicated

My son who has been on meds for all of his educated life, currently 6th grade, complains of feeling "bored" whenever he is on his meds. Just curious if others experience this too, and if you found anything that works. We are contemplating dropping the meds, as we are in a school that is supportive and agreeable to helping him manage his symptoms drug free.

Boredom when Medicated

I have a 17 year old daughter however, I vividly remember the trouble I had starting in 6th grade. With Puberty, diet and life, it was extremely difficult. By 8th grade we settled on 60mg of Adderall XR every day and have stuck with it ever since. While puberty was still delayed and anxiety, stress and social anxiety remained. It allowed her to sleep, to not become a "zombie," and to stabilize her appetite. It wasn't perfect but it stuck with her through high school much better than everything else. The medication and her taking on a lot of computer web site design, digital graphic art, etc not to mention her extracurricular activity of riding every day after school, really helped with the boredom. If you can get him to build things, try wood models, IKEA furniture, etc.

You could just try it...

I don't think it would hurt to let him try for a few weeks to a month to see how he does without meds, especially if the teachers are supportive! Beware that the first week off,he could be "worse" than normal, but then should settle back down some..so give it longer than a week. Good luck. He's probably feeling more bored on meds than off because he is more focused and his mind isn't as quick to wonder to more exciting things, like what he's going to do after school/the weekend....

Flatlined Son

My 6th grade son has been on meds since 2nd grade. He too takes Adderall XR. He is always begging to skip his meds. Can't seem to eat or sleep with them and he thinks he is more fun to be around when off of them. in his defence he is quite somber when the medicine is in effect but anytime we have lowered the dose his grades drop. We give him weekends off. But we haven't found any perfect solution.
