What to expect from Psychiatrists???
Hi, My daughter's family is really struggling to deal with my precious grandsons ADHD/ODD. He is increasing getting worse. They don't know how to cope with the situation and desperately need parenting training to learn how to deal with him. They are doing the best "they know how" but what they are doing is not working. He seems to be getting more and more beligerant and angry by the day. I am so worried about him that I'm having trouble sleeping. My question is what do your Psychiatrist do? My daughter's Phychiatrist spends about 15 minutes with them, gives them little in the form of help (may suggest ONE tiny thing to try), prescribes meds and they are on their way. The last visit, I ended up taking him because my daughter couldn't get off of work. I explained that they are in desperate need of support and training and asked if he could direct them to any support groups or family training and he offered NOTHING ... and this is in one of the 4-5 largest cities in the nation. I find it hard to believe that there is nothing in this city (and that a reliable Psychiatrist wouldn't know of anything). My question is... is prescribing meds the only (main) thing that Phychiatrist do? Are we being unrealistic in our expectations or should they start looking for a new Psychiatrist? My daughter is very frustrated with the lack of help and she feels that although meds help (during school hours) that it doesn't address many of the problems my grandchild is facing. |

New Psychiatrist
Since you are in a large city, look for someone new. Also look for a developmental pediatrician. Your children's hospital should also have resources for you. I will say that sometimes when you get 15 new suggestions of what to do, it can be very overwhelming and none of them end up getting implemented. Sometimes 1 at a time and really working at that one behaviour change in the family is the best way. It feels like it needs to be a sprint and as much as we are ready to run as fast as we can to make changes we are really in a marathon. Slow and steady!! Good luck, continue to be a great positive support for your family |

Psychiatrists
I also agree that you should try to find one that is helpful. It sounds like yours is just sucking money out of yall for just writing scripts. He should be able to direct you to help and anything else you need or need to ask about. Thanks |

Psychiatrist
I too had the same problems that you are facing. In 15 min medications uped tics worse and didn't know what to do. Psychiatrist just seem to give out meds and send you on your way. I decided to try neurofeedback and I lucked out. The pschyologist told me that the medication, which was giving him tics could cause neurological damage. I found a new pshcyiatrist. We took my son off his stimulant medication and the tics are gone. I have a better psychiatrist and he is also for natural supplements. He still is not as helpful as I would like, but the psychologist is wonderful. She has been walking me through what we can do she even went to my school to help me get him on an IEP. So with the neurofeedback and the behavior therapy my son is doing so much better. She as helped me to understand my son better and has given me great parental tips that have worked. I finally have a team of Dr's that are working together to help my son. It sometimes takes you a few tries to find the right Dr, but don't give up on your grandkid. It took me 5 years. If you do go to a psychologist make sure that they specialize in ADHD because if not they will not be helpful at all. My sons psychologist has a son with ADHD and a daughter with bipolar, so she became very knowlegeable with the brain and that is why she started to do neurofeedback because she felt there had to be more than medicine. |

Psychiatrists
I had a very similiar experience, and after much frustration went to another psychiatrist. On the first visit she recommended a complete neuropsycholocal evaluation which identified learning disabilities that had to be addressed with educational therapy. She also suggested a social worker that has training groups for social skills for ADHD children. I think you should keep your eyes and ears open, because unfurtunately not al those that are supposed to help us do. |
