What to expect from Psychiatrists???
Hi,
My daughter's family is really struggling to deal with my precious grandsons ADHD/ODD. He is increasing getting worse. They don't know how to cope with the situation and desperately need parenting training to learn how to deal with him. They are doing the best "they know how" but what they are doing is not working. He seems to be getting more and more beligerant and angry by the day. I am so worried about him that I'm having trouble sleeping.
My question is what do your Psychiatrist do? My daughter's Phychiatrist spends about 15 minutes with them, gives them little in the form of help (may suggest ONE tiny thing to try), prescribes meds and they are on their way. The last visit, I ended up taking him because my daughter couldn't get off of work. I explained that they are in desperate need of support and training and asked if he could direct them to any support groups or family training and he offered NOTHING ... and this is in one of the 4-5 largest cities in the nation. I find it hard to believe that there is nothing in this city (and that a reliable Psychiatrist wouldn't know of anything). My question is... is prescribing meds the only (main) thing that Phychiatrist do? Are we being unrealistic in our expectations or should they start looking for a new Psychiatrist? My daughter is very frustrated with the lack of help and she feels that although meds help (during school hours) that it doesn't address many of the problems my grandchild is facing.
