Studying with ADD

Hi all, I'm 42 and am diagnosed with ADD while the school was in the process of testing our son. I'm doing okay, managing the 'bad' stuff from having ADD to the best of my abilities but also enourmously enjoying the good. I will start taking medication soon and that's when I want to pick-up my online study again. I know I could use some support in this and am looking for an ADD support (study?) group. I use many succesful strategies to organize myself and the family, but am a horrible organizer/procrastinator as soon as it comes to stuff that I want to do JUST FOR ME, myself and I. Like all my energy is gone after taking care of all the other stuff. Anybody recognizes this? I live in CT am interested in teaming up with people both online and in real life. If you have ideas for me, let me know! Thanks a lot, Coco

Of course some of us know what you mean!

I managed to do well in school even though I was never able to study. At all. Ever. I was lucky, and I picked courses where I learned things (writing papers) instead of studying (grades based solely on exams).

I'm sure there are many adults who would welcome a study group. Maybe you can look for people on other sites too. If I had something to study for, I'd be up for it. RIght now I need people to check in with each day about plain old everyday actions.

Studying

My son is in school and he can not focus to study unless the TV and the radio is on at the same time for his busy mind. Then he is able to hyperfocus to really get into the books. I know that this sounds strange, but if it works for him. Who am I to judge.

ADD Study group

Hi all Thanks for your reactions. We could start an online study group using MSN/skype. Just to meet up and talk to other people who have the same problem without actually having to be in the same geographic area.... I thing we could set up a time each week on which we would all log on and talk about our progress (or lack of it!). any thoughts? Nicoline

..and then there was silence!

I attend a support group and there is often discussion about why we aren't doing more organized meetings... speakers, topics, book discussions etc... and then we start chatting about that really ADD moment we had today at work! and then nobody wants to commit to follow through so one person carries all the responsibility... who then gets pissed because nobody even responds to the emails or backs out at the last minute (or doesn't even show up).

Ah.... Good Luck on this... not to be a pessimist but actually humorous to me

paradoxical ADHD wish list

You guys crack me up too. I am not a pessimist either, I'm realist. So here we have a group of ADHDers thinking they are going to follow through on a plan... now that's funny, I don't care who you are, that's funny. It's like a bunch of near sighted people meeting to practice squinting together. Seriously, I am not putting you down, but if you can pull that off effectivly you are a better man than I. It took all the guts I could muster just to reply to this message board, (you know, to finish the job). Now go out and hug an ADDer and cut yourself some slack.

Studying with ADD

Lol!!!!!!! Yeah that is humorous when you think about it...I would probably forget the day or the time or both. But, it is a good thought.

That's why a message board is a better idea. It is 24 hours a day and location independent.

I am noticing in one month of treatment I am able to read much more easily. I have polished off several books that would have taken me months.

Reading the comments above made me laugh and then grow pensive. I have been struggling with ADD since childhood and never knew what what was wrong with me. I never seemed to be able to complete something or stick with something for a long time. My diagnosis was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Now I look for ways to do a better job in managing my life. I have a new career (teaching) that I LOVE and it better matches my abilities. I think that a support group would be a wonderful idea. Just the act of getting together with other people that struggle with the rigors of ADD would be a big help. It would also help my wife to understand me and this disability. I am going to talk to my Psychologist about starting a group or finding one in out area. Now, if I could only find those darn keys I could get to the phone that I left in the car :-)

Support Group

rjharlan: you are right on with the support group!

Once I had personally figured out I have ADHD, I IMMEDIATELY searched the internet and found a support group! I was first diagnosed (at age 32) and the group has been, I don't even know how to say it... I just couldn't imagine being in the 'place' I am without it.

My diagnosing psychologist and I went through only a handful of sessions because he thought that I was working through my issues through my group and he felt my energies were well spent. Not all groups will do that, but even now when I need to be around others that speak my language, I know where to find them!

My only issue with my group is internal: I am impatient and restless and it's difficult for me to sit through some of the less dynamic aspects...!
