not returning completed homework to teachers
My son, age 11, just started middle school as a 6th grader. He was diagnosed with adhd in 1st grade. He has been taking meds. for about four years and they help a lot with focus and impulsivity. He is an intuitive learner and he has a great memory. Early on in his schooling, he would grasp concepts quickly, and he was a very strong student K through 3. In 4th grade, math started getting more complicated. Long division in particular required more sustained effort, and my son started getting frustrated, as he could no longer do math in his head. His teachers were also less forgiving about careless spelling errors, poor handwriting, etc. This year we tweaked his homework routine, and he's been very motivated to do well in school. However, we are only 4 weeks into the school year, and he has forgotten to turn in his completed assignments 5 times already. In 6th grade, his teachers won't accept late work, so he earns zero points. He gets mostly A's for class work, but the zeros bring his grade way down. He wants to be responsible for his work, and doesn't want me reminding him, but the current approach clearly isn't working. I'm hoping that some of you parents that have been through similar situations may be able to share advice on two points. First, any ideas for ensuring that work gets turned in would be appreciated. Second, he has never had a 504 plan or IEP. I'm not sure whether or not one would be helpful. Would it be in my son's best interest to make accommodations, or would I be enabling him to be less accountable and dependent on others?
