Starting Medication
Our 8 year old was diagnosed about 2 years ago with ADD (inattentive). We were hoping that we could teach him the strategies required to cope this this disorder rather than putting him on medication. He is rapidly deteriorating in his ability to cope and we have come to the realization that medication may be his only hope. We are not opposed to the medication itself. Our concern is that it is very difficult for us to administer medication of any sort. He is very opposed and strong willed against taking any kind of medicine (cold, vaccines, daily vitamin, etc.). In order to get his flu shot, it takes four nurses and myself to hold him still. I am scared to death about administering this too him. The doctor is recommending Strattera which, I understand, comes in capsule form that can not be opened due to its time release. In anticipation of this possibility, this summer we tried to "challenge" our son to swallow a "Smartie" with his beverage. There was no way he would even consider this - even without pressure. What am I going to do? Is it worth the daily physical and mental struggle to put him on medication? I need some help. |

Some Ideas...
Hi Valerie, That is a tough situation. Most importantly, you should be in close contact with your child's doctor and make sure he/she knows about your son's difficulty with medication. You can also look at some of the articles on additudemag.com. You may find help here: A Parent's Guide to Explaining ADHD Drugs http://additudemag.us.thirdfloor.com.au/adhd/article/850.html Top 10 Questions About ADHD Medication http://additudemag.us.thirdfloor.com.au/adhd/article/1592-3.html Ask the Expert: Alternatives to Swallowing Pills http://additudemag.us.thirdfloor.com.au/q&a/ask_the_add_medical_expert/1583.html There is also another thread in the forums about children who have difficulty swallowing pills, and you might find some helpful hints from other parents there: http://additudemag.us.thirdfloor.com.au/adhdforums/thread/2957.html Again, make sure you discuss all options and ideas with your doctor before you try them! Good Luck! |

Starting Medications
It is hard when you have a child that it is hard to administer medication to. There is an alternative ADD/ADHD medication out there that your child might do great on. It is a patch that is called Daytrana. It is a stimulant. Your doctor should be familiar with this one. You put it on your child or they can place it on themselves every morning and is removed around 5pm. Your child will feel like they are part of their treatment if they are old enough for this. I would just check behind them every morning to make sure that it is being done. It might get forgotten otherwise. Good luck with your doctor's appt. Hope this info helped. |
