Starting Medication
Our 8 year old was diagnosed about 2 years ago with ADD (inattentive). We were hoping that we could teach him the strategies required to cope this this disorder rather than putting him on medication. He is rapidly deteriorating in his ability to cope and we have come to the realization that medication may be his only hope. We are not opposed to the medication itself. Our concern is that it is very difficult for us to administer medication of any sort. He is very opposed and strong willed against taking any kind of medicine (cold, vaccines, daily vitamin, etc.). In order to get his flu shot, it takes four nurses and myself to hold him still. I am scared to death about administering this too him. The doctor is recommending Strattera which, I understand, comes in capsule form that can not be opened due to its time release. In anticipation of this possibility, this summer we tried to "challenge" our son to swallow a "Smartie" with his beverage. There was no way he would even consider this - even without pressure. What am I going to do? Is it worth the daily physical and mental struggle to put him on medication? I need some help.
