call the doc

I would call your doctor. The dose may be to high or the wrong kind of medication.

medications

I actually had my son ion three different medications and found no success in any of them. The side effects of depression and aggression were more of a problem in school then the success of a medication. My family are trying no medications to see if there is any difference.

Side effects of Ritalin

It is important to let your doctor know what problems your child is experiencing. They may or may not be related to the medication. Timmom,

You mentioned that your child was having problems with depression and aggression while on medication. Although, I could be wrong, I don't think that is a side effect of the medication. However, I do know a few things that it could indicate. When a child has depression, either in addition to ADD or instead of ADD, the ADD medication will unmask the depression so that it becomes more apparent. If a child becomes hostile or aggressive on medication, there is a possibility of another disorder present, such as depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder. The other disorder may need to be treated first before ADD treatment can be started. I would make sure to have your child evaluated for the other possibilities.

Sue, Methyline can cause fast heart beats

Methylin (methylphenidate) side effects Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop taking methylphenidate and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeats;

feeling light-headed, fainting;

increased blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, trouble concentrating, chest pain, numbness, seizure);

fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;

aggression, restlessness, hallucinations, unusual behavior, or motor tics (muscle twitches); or

easy bruising, purple spots on your skin.

Chest/Heart pains

I am ADD and my son and daughter are both ADHD. My doctor asks me everytime we visit if I have had any chest palputations or heavy or fast beating. He has had to decrease my dosage because of it. I have been told that the meds are much like speed and this is probably the reason for the pains.

side effects

Sue, As an adult with ADHD I have had side effects of chest pains. My doctor insisted that I attempt to eat more protein in the morning which has been effective. I have simply been alternating microwavable sausage or bacon with my cereal in the morning. I have also had to avoid foods high in sugar while taking (ritalin LA)meds.

Side affects

My son was on several different meds since the 2nd grade. Last year around March doctors decided to up meds, I agreed. After day five of being on Concerta he told me he did not feel well. I decided to take him off of 54 mg and put him back on a lower dose. When it was time for his monthly visit the doctor did his normal check-up and noticed he had a irregular heart ( I think that is how you spell it). We took him off of all meds.He was then put on a 24 hr holter monitor and then went to see a specialist. They did lots of tests and could give me no answers. The doctors said they could not determine why he has an irregular heartbeat. Everything looked normal. I think the meds caused this. The doctors will not admit to this but I know they cause this problem. He now takes no meds. He struggles in school but I'd rather deal with that then have a dead son.

I am speechless about your response. My son was just diagnosed 7months ago and the Ritalin has been so effective and changed his life and ours. I will be calling the Dr. first thing in the morning . I'm sorry you had that scare .
