Has anyone experiences seizures after starting meds?
Hello , Our 8 yr old son began taking Adderall for his ADDin May of this year. Then in Nov, he had a very scary, full blown seizure. Then over this last weekend, he had a partial seizure. Seizures do not run in our family and when he was in kindergarten, he was on Respirdal (for his bipolar/ODD diagnosis) for a while but developed bad symptoms like tics and also had a couple of seizures but when he was sleeping. He was quickly pulled off of all meds and we chose not to medicate until he reached 2nd grade and couldn't pay attention long enough to write more than one sentence. We chose to just deal with the ADHD issue and medicate for that using Adderall. Of course, we want to think that it is because of the meds. His doctor doesn't think so and research I've done on the internet points in the direction that it is not likely to be causing it. I am wondering if other people have experienced anything similar and what did they do about it? I would appreciate any feedback since we are so worried about him. The meds have done wonders for his ADD esp. in school work so we don't just want to pull him off of the meds. His doctor doesn't think that he had a seizure since there were signs that do not coincide with a typical seizure, for instance, my 8 yr old remembered every second of the seizure and was conscience during the whole thing. So to him, that makes it not a seizure. He thinks it points more towards what can happen if you hyperventilate since our son was very mad the first time and very scared the second time, so that is a possibility. Thank you for any feedback you can share. Susan |

seizures after trying ADHD meds
Hi... my son tried Adderall and then Ritilin (only 3 doses of Adderall and 1 of Ritilin) in Aug/Sept 2006 right before he turned 5. We took him off them due to side effects (mood swings/aggression). He went for his first NeuroPsych exam in Sept 2006 and the Psychologist witnessed what turned out to be a complex partial seizure (staring and non-responsive for about 30 seconds with no memory of it). He also experienced two others - one at home and one at school - that we know of during that time. He underwent an EEG which showed seizure activity but a follow-up two months later of a 24-hour EEG was clean. The Neurologist decided not to medicate him and just wait and see. He hasn't had any episodes since (over a year now). He began taking a small dose of Tenex in October 2006 and it's helped a lot with hyperactivity and impulse control. I've heard the same things from doctors that it's not likely the ADHD meds caused the seizures but they can't say for sure. The past year is enough evidence for me that they had something to do with it. I'm not sure what we'll do down the road when more attention will be needed for school but for now I refuse to take the chance. I'm hoping it was related to his young age - doctors don't seem to have a problem prescribing brain-altering drugs to 4-yr-old these days! Thanks for posting - I've been wondering if anyone else had similar responses to meds... interested to see if there will be others posted here. Mom of CJ |
