Reading with Adult ADD - a reply!

Hi - this is my reply to Swimdad's post. I can't seem to post a direct reply to his thread (as mentioned in another thread)...so for now here's my reply:

I'm going to assume that you're having problems with keeping "on track" with reading things. I have trouble with this too. Here's a few tricks that I use:

If it's a document that you can write on - absolutely cover it in notes/diagrams! I usually write 'I don't get this bit' at times so I don't just go over the same detail over and over again, and can move on with the rest. I find writing down questions is useful too - what does that mean? Why is this thing called that? For me, it even helps to just doodle down things that are completely unrelated - a doodle of a face or flower or something. If the information that's in the document is something that needs to be remembered (for study or work for instance) then having silly stuff on it HELPS me with remembering it!

If it's a book, still write on it! I usually write things on the margins in 2B pencil - it rubs off more easily.

Sometimes it helps me if I "listen" to the radio, even talk radio while I'm reading. Except it usually turns out that I'm not listening at all, but just hearing it seems to help somehow. Also, reading in different places helps me too sometimes. If I get bored in one place, move!

If it's a story, I'll try and get any outside information on it if I'm having trouble following it. E.g. rent the film! Or talk to someone who's read it. Look it up on wikipedia etc. Just need to be a bit careful about spoilers.

Finally, I've recently got back into reading by just reading some really good books! Not too complex or anything, and I think it's helped with my reading of more complex things for my studies as well.

Hope that some of this helps
