Any Good Parenting Books?
Hello all, I'm a librarian trying to develop a parenting collection geared towards parents/families of ADD/LD kids. Do any of you have favorite books that you have found helpful in raising your ADD/LD kids? Any books you like about parenting in general? I'm looking for ideas from people who know the ADD/LD terrain rather than going with what the administration at the library thinks we need. Any and all idea are greatly appreciated! Booklady

RE: Good Parenting Books
A book that I found helpful is "All About Attention Deficit Disorder" by Thomas Phelan. It had a chapter or two on how to discipline children and teenagers who had ADHD, since they respond differently than children who don't have ADHD. His ideas were easy to implement and made sense.

RE: Good Parenting Books
Hi Booklady: Here's a short list of some of the more popular books that a lot of parents have used and found really helpful. PS - I got this list from http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/2863.html Raising Your Spirited Child, by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka, parentchildhelp.com, is a classic guide that offers a positive four-step program for handling behavior from mealtime to bedtime, for children with ADHD. Basic discipline for any child Thomas W. Phelan’s 1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 2-12, parentmagic.com, is a simple approach—control obnoxious behavior, encourage good behavior, strengthen the bond with your child—that parents should have in their discipline toolbox. Russell A. Barkley stresses consistency and cooperation, and promoting change through a system of praise and punishment, Your Defiant Child, russellbarkley.org. Foster W. Cline’s philosophy—Parenting with Love and Logic, loveandlogic.com—shows parents how to introduce practical consequences to children’s behavior while teaching them to solve their own problems. Ross W. Greene proposes that challenging behavior be handled as if it were a learning disability in The Explosive Child, explosivechild.com. His approach empowers parents to teach their child the cognitive skills needed to manage behavior.

RE: Good Parenting Books
“1-2-3 Magic” was a great help for us. Since ADHD is often hereditary, you may want to include videos and books on tape or CD to help parents of ADHD children who may have ADHD themselves and can't get past page 3 of a large informational book...just a though.

Transforming the Difficult Child
I really like Transforming the Difficult Child. Unlike other behavior mod books I tried (one which I jokingly called "Kick your Kid's Butt) this one helps you build up your child's sense of being successful. I've had immediate improvement in overall attitude, helpfulness, and neatness. As usual there are rules, and points, timeouts. |

Great Parenting Books
The best one I ever read, and I've read A LOT, is the Steps to Effective Parenting by Gary McKay and Don Dinkmeyer. It transformed our home. Another excellent resource is one that I saw someone mention, The Explosive Child by Russ Greene. Two of the best helps I've ever come across. Also agree with another member about anything by Ned Hallowell. |
