ADDult ADD/Happy Holidays/What works for YOU?

Bryan Dodge was the highest rated ADHD-er in the state of Texas, I think. When he took the test the counselor shared his results. Bryan said,"How'd I do?" The Counselor said, "Bryan, you changed the parameters of the test!"

Like, it was that obvious we have ADD. So our friends and family knew the whole time that we had that certain personality, BUT didn't know what to blame it on? No problem.

It is NOT a problem, IT IS A GIFT WE HAVE. The GIFT of spontaneity and fun and adventure that our other counterparts or friends WISH they had!! Yes, We DO have to LEARN to get along with others. That's the challenge. Say Yes or yes!

How many of us feel the same way?

Check out Bryan's videos and audios to help people and the one about ADHD and discipline. He says medication CAN help, but NOT to count on it as a crutch. COPY AND PASTE: Visit his site: http://www.bryandodge.com/audiovideo.htm COPY AND PASTE: And also the main site for Bryan at: http://www.bryandodge.com/

I think ADD and Entreprenuers have much in common! 1. Risk takers. 2. Can hyper focus on a dream or goal 3. Spontaneous 4. Like being around people 5. Talk to everyone 6. And more Did I miss something? Are these things just in me, or do you see them too?

I think I found the perfect biz for me with ADD. Add your feedback or take some feedback from this loooong thread or topic.

P.S. If you like photography and being around people, maybe we should team up and partner. Reply to this topic if you would like to know more.

Today I STILL personally believe that ADHD or anything like it can be helped or assisted by just plain d i s c i p l i n e . DISCIPLINE. Discipline. I heard teachers prefer drugs for ADHD for one reason only. (Makes their job easier, and I kinda BELIEVE IT TOO...but, if you're a teacher or know a teacher who teaches ADHD students, I am sure they are doing whatever they got to do to make the best of THEIR SITUATION. I hope so anyway. Big :)

I grew up my whole life thus far without drugs and late in life was diagnosed while MOM always was my disciplinarian. NOW - my WIFE and my MOM are my disciplinarians.(Is that a word? Looks too long!)

But ANYWAY, DO YOU THINK I LISTEN TO MY MOM AND MY WIFE ALL THE TIME? NO! But I do listen to them often, then I come to decisions with their suggestions and I REMIND MYSELF to speak * C A L M L Y * to them or anyone. Still learning, and growing my photography studio. (Are You Good At Photoshop? Want To Learn Photoshop? Want To Own A Photo Studio? Want To Do It With Me? CONTACT ME. Maybe we can work together as I mentioned before somewhere in this long intro?)

Maybe you were not fortunate like me have a mom say stuff like,"Clean your room, NOW!" and CONSTANT reminders...but I still get those reminders today from my wife and my mom!

Everyone around us ADHDers is a product of our environment and everything works like a well oiled engine with all the sum of the parts. My friends, family and even clients are my system. My to do list gets me places. sounds good, Right?!

Time to continue moving forward with your goals 1 step at a time! Just 1 inch at a time!

YOU CAN DO IT! Especially if I can! So can YOU! I am no motivational guy, and NO big shot here. Just a little shot who keeps shooting!!! Like basketall, soccer, sports, running..?? Everything requires practice, discipline and incremental improvement and you can WIN TOO!

What Works to help focus? Got something to add?

1. Use w.i.n. = What's important now?

2. G.S.S.D.T. = Get some stuff done today! (NOT everything - Cut your goal in half at first, and DO less when it seems overwhelming)

3. Teamwork makes the dream work!

4. Let's help each other from here!

5. Fitness helps my add brain too! Train for ENDURANCE.

6. I cut my own meds to ONLY running. This seems to help me.

7. We are all DIFFERENT. What works for me, may be different for you.

8. ANYONE can do 1-2 MPH on a treadmill or outside for 30 minutes!

9. (Add 10 minutes each WEEKEND to increase TIME, NOT speed) And let the other stuff fall into place!

10. Don't try, DO! <--Yoda said it best! You can do it!

11. Favorite ADHD links that are helpful: http://www.thomhartmann.com/hunterfarmer.shtml

12. *reply to this post every week* Don't wait til someone answers. Let us know what works for you THIS week!

I am newly diagnosed and confused if I am doing enough to cope or not.

I write a lot of stuff down, and read a lot. And exercise quite a bit.

Looking for what works for you? Coping Skills That Is?

I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Sincerely, Paul

P.S. NO ONE THING WORKS FOR ME EXCEPT Re-motivating myself constantly!

Also, I am a V i s u a l learner. If someone shows me ONCE, then I am an expert. What's wrong with a mentor, teacher, friend helping you do your homework. Even if they DO it, so what. What is RIGHT is others showing us what to do at FIRST! When I do next week's homework, by myself, then isn't that learning?

Kindest regards, Paul

Some things that work for me

Hi Paul,

What areas are you looking for coping skills? ADD can affect every aspect of one's life, so there is quite a range. And what works for one individual might not work for another.

Exercise does trigger the release of neurotransmitters in the brain, which is probably why you find it beneficial.

Some stategies that I find that help in a wide range of areas are breaking things down into smaller steps, using alarms, and using controlled distractions.

What I've tried...

Hi Paul!

I find it necessary to write stuff down as well. Another thing I've found real helpful is that I changed to black-framed glasses instead of the wire-framed ones. Having my field of vision framed with a thick black line really has helped me to focus better. I never thought of it until my doctor mentioned it. Works well. OK, the Ritalin helps too!

Good luck Paul, I wish you Godspeed.

Still looking for strategies

I'm still trying to figure that out myself! I also find writing things down helpful, and scheduling regular self organization sessions, but it does depend on what aspect of the AD/HD you're dealing with at a particular time.

Take Care! KPC

Thanks for replies!

Thanks guys, every bit helps.

Mostly looking for help in the work/career area.

Since that one pays the bills.

And can effect most other areas... to me anyway How do you feel about that part?

So, at work I probably want to take more breaks...work in 45 min power blocks and take a 15 min break as a REWARD.

When I do that, it seems to work great!

any other work tips for DISTRACTIONS?

Also, I count to TEN BEFORE I speak to control frustration with anyone.

Thanks for listening,

Paul

Get a calendar!

One of the best things for me is a large, desktop calendar (the kind you see in executive offices--the blocks for the dates are about 2" square-plenty of room to write), hanging on the wall, color-coded by person. My stuff is highlighted in pink (none of the guys wanted it!), Son #1 is in yellow, Son #2 is in green, Scout stuff (son #2 and hubby) is in purple, stuff that is tentative is literally "penciled in"...

"If it ain't written down, it won't get done" is my motto. I make my "today's to-do list" from this every morning---even my kids have learned that I need this to ensure everything gets done.

This is not something new for me-my mom had this system in place when we were growing up-and she is not diagnosed ADHD (but I wouldn't be surprised, since both my boys and I are...)

What works...... huh? :)

Thanks for the tips! This is my first post on this forum; my frustration is through the roof.... Yesterday: in the morning my part time job calls, "Ummmm, you should have been here 20 mins ago..." today: walk into my 9:30am therapy session, therapist grins at me and says, "Hi! I had you down for 9 am..."

Trying to find a way to battle this crap... wife has about had it, and I'm looking at methods to control (or contain) the madness....

10mg of Adderall X2 doesn't seem to make a dent....

Had a photography business, but am looking for more structured full time job- my strengths are NOT in the business management arena!!!

sigh.... just got "View from a cliff" by Lynn Weiss- hopefully will be able to construct a method of organization with help from my various tools: PDA, Cellphone calendar, lists in notebook, wall calendar, notes on white board.... oh, did I mention my perfectionistic wife? :)

bad day, but will take baby steps to get better- diagnosed about a year ago....

Bob
