short acting Focalin
My son does not use the Focalin XR but he does use the short acting Focalin for after school when needed and for baseball. I don't know if I can help you or not. |

My son was taking Focalin XR
Until a week ago, my son was taking Focalin XR. He just switched to the Daytrana patch, which seems to be working REALLY well. Before the Focalin XR, he took the short-acting Focalin. Although the XR seemed to work ok, I do believe the short-acting version was better. The effectiveness of the patch for him is more like the short-acting Focalin in terms of his ability to stay focused, get his work done, remember things, etc. |

Focalin XR
My son has been on the Focalin XR for about a year now. He takes 15mg in the am and then he takes the fast acting 5mg pill at 2:30pm each day in school. Tweaking it this way has helped him through the end of the school day and into homework and after school activities. Side effects - none for him. Good appetite, sleeping well, no mood swings (other than the normal 9 year old fits!) I have never experienced the dilated pupils. |

? for Maxsmom599
With the booster in the afternoon, does your son have any trouble getting to sleep at night? My son was increased to 10mg.(in the morning) a couple of weeks ago. He does seem to be doing better, but I think it is still wearing off a little bit early. I think he is still a little bit spacey in class too. I am not sure if increasing to 15mg. might solve both issues. Did you see a big difference when you increased from 10mg. to 15 mg.? Thanks! :-) |

Focalin in the afternoon
Sorry for not responding sooner. He takes the fast acting 5mg at 2:30pm. It has no effect at all on his getting to sleep. He goes to bed during the school year at 8:30pm and has no difficulty. Since it is not the XR, it wears off by that time. The only issue we had was getting him to remember to go to the clinic at school to take it. So he now has a digital watch with an alarm that beeps at 2:30pm each day. Works like a charm! As for the increase from the 10mg to 15mg XR in the morning - BIG difference for us! His teacher said he is able to complete his work in a much more timely manner. |

After three horrible afternoons in a row struggling with inattentiveness and processing problems, I finally decided that there was a pattern developing. My son and I were both in tears yesterday afternoon. It is so hard to watch him struggle. I called his doctor and told him about what was going on. He suggested that we try increasing the Focalin XR to 15 mg. instead of trying a booster in the afternoon. My son weighs about 63 lbs. and he said that kids in his weight range take from 15mg. to 25mg. I am hoping that we see results soon. He said that we should know within two weeks whether or not it will work. We had our parent/teacher conferences and the medication has really helped him at school. He has improved all across the board! He actually scored a 100% on his spelling sentences test last week. That was the first time ever!!! :-) I am confident that we are doing the right thing. All of the adjustments are really frustrating though. My hope that it is just a matter of time before he will be able to focus at school...AND at home. I will keep you posted. |

Focalin XR
Yes - my 5yo son has been on FXR15mg for about 2 weeks - we are about to take him off. Like others have been saying - the lower dose 10 mg worked better. He developed a tick - touching his face every few seconds and was very spacy. I was interested in hearing about the second dose (5mg) in the afternoon - I'll check into that. Thanks |

Information regarding Frocalin
I don't know anyone but want to share something that may be help to u. Frocalin has no advantage over similar drugs with longer safety records. Methylphenidate is the name of the most commonly used medication for the psychopharmacotherapy of ADHD.

excellent results that came with a price
I used Focalin XR 10 mg for a month, and I learned more in that one month than the rest of my life combined. For the first time in my life, I pickes up a book and read it FOR FUN!! I started with Healing ADD, which I had for 3 years now.. outside of that one month, I read 10 pages. However, it gave me mind-splitting migraine headaches worthy of serious prescription pain killers. Now, I'm on the Daytrana patch (as far as I can tell, the only adult who is!) and as this is doing ZIP for me, I would rather have the migraines and know what was going on.

15mg
My son also takes 15mg every am, the only side effect he has had has been no appetite for lunch. He is 9yo and only weighs 51 lbs, he is soo very skinny, rarely eats lunch at school. We were prescribed the Daytrana Patch 15mg and it is not enough we are working on what he should be taking but he did eat while he was on that. Hopefully we figure it out soon. Other then the appetitie I/he really liked FocalinXR. |

Focalin
Focalin XR worked good for us but didn't last long enough. 40 mg at 6 am and again at 10 am.... by 2 pm it was completely worn off. Plus my son didn't eat all day. He's 10 and weighs 65 lbs. We are on Vyvanse once a day and it really helped with the hyperactivity but his attention is at about 30% for the whole day. On Focalin is was higher but when the meds wore off so went the attention. |

My son also weighes in at about 66 pounds. The 15mg XR is the adjustments we needed. At our parent-teacher conference, we were told that he was sort of "fading" in the afternoons. That's why his doctor recommended a small, fast-acting dose. The problem we recently faced was our son forgetting to go to the clinic at the appropriate time to get his med. Go figure...and ADHDer forgetting! So now he wears a simple digital watch with an alrm set for 2:30pm. His teacher is cool with it and when it goes off, he shuts it off immediately and heads to the clinic. That extra dose helps through the afternoon at school and through homework. We have him do his homework right away because the later it gets, the more tired and frustrated he can become with it. |

Focalin XR
My son is on Focalin XR however, he complained of nausea and "not being able to laugh or be himself" so we are going down in dose to see if this works. He is on a super low dose compared to what I read in the other threads (10mg). Obviously this proves that every one is different in how medication affects them. He was diagnosed in 2nd grade and he now is in 8th grade. This year has been the worst for sure as far as getting assignments, homework completed, testing, etc. I am pretty exhausted but trying to gear up for high school this next year! |

9 yr old son on it for 2 years
My 9 yr old son has been taking Focalin XR 15mg for two years now and we love it. I am also ADD and take Adderall XR 25mg and have been taking it for 6 years and prior to that was on Ritalin 25mg for 9 yrs and both of those have lots of side effects. With Ritalin the main one was lack of appetite but because I was in 3rd grade - 12 grade when I was taking it I ate at lunch time no matter what just because there was nothing else to do and everyone else was and I knew I needed to eat but I was not hungry( My grandparents worried about my weight during this time because I was always under weight for my age bracket) and the other thing is that it eventually lost its effectiveness and thats why I had to switch to Adderall. With Adderall I have LOTS of side effects: big time loss of appetite(which at 26yrs old and still weighing 118lbs. I don't really complain about this one. I know its sad to say it but its like a super diet pill because it truly surpresses your appetite.), dry mouth, jittery, tense muscles and the worst is now I am getting irregular heart rate and my heart beats prematurely plus shortness of breath and chest pain and INSOMNIA...so needless to say I am getting off of it(I know have to take beta blockers to control my heart rate) and am looking at switching to Focalin myself. |
