Strattera... Trying it..
After living most of my life with "depression", I've found out I really have ADD. No wonder I used to love Preludin back in the '70's ! And that I've been through the entire list, yes, the entire list (30++ yr span), of antidepressants, yet not a single one has ever seemed to do a thing except occasionally make me feel funny in some cases. Anyway, the only way I discovered this was through a friend who has ADD. He told me I should be tested for it, and I was. I've been placed on Statera, but I know there are many other drugs. I'll give the drug a long trial period and see how things work out. My friend was taking dexadrine, now vyvanse. It really makes little difference to me what I take, as long as it starts helping. Does anyone know what a "nominal" or "normal" adult dose is, after one's initially started the drug and been on it a while. I thought I had read that the dosage is started low and built up. Thanks. |

Straterra is not usually the first choice
Hi Falcon9, Unfortunately, many people esp. adults miss being diagnosed with ADD. I don't know what the dosages are for Straterra. My husband was put on that first becasue of a past heart attack but it didn't work. He is now on Adderall. Straterra is not usually the first choice because it doesn't work as well as the stimulants for most people, but there are a few that it works for. Usually, some form of methylphenidate (Concerta, Focalin, Ritalin, etc.) or Adderall is tried first. Straterra has to build up in your system for several weeks before it takes effect. The stimulants start working right away. Because everyone's metabolism is different, the smaller dosage is tried first and then increased until maximum benefit is reached or side effects become a problem. Straterra is also supposed to help with depression, I believe. What type of doctor are you seeing? My husband had seen 5 different psychiatrists for depression (which he did have) but none of them picked up on his ADD. And it was pretty glaring to me. (Our son and daughter both had it and it was obvious he had it too.) A general practitioner finally picked up on it the first time my husband saw the doctor. I hope you get relief soon. Good luck. I'll try it...
That's really amazing Elaine. I've seen countless (for real) psychiatrists and not a single one of them picked up on it (well, to be fair, I've seen the same one for the past 20 yrs), but it was a GP who picked up on my problem too. I have a friend in Dallas who takes Vyvanse, and although I realize it's not a good ideal at all, he sent me a couple. Then, I recently changed doctors (gp). It's really coincidental, because the doctor asked me why I was taking the Valium & Wellbutrin; after talking with me for a while, he told me he would like to refer me to another doctor. The rest, as is so often stated, is history. I know nothing about the Straterra except what I've read (everything I could find), but I'll try it and see how things go. |
