Vyvanse?

Hi everyone,

I discovered this forum while looking for information about ADD/ADHD. My wife of 10 years was diagnosed 3 months ago with ADHD-inattentive subtype, which explains a lot. Our oldest son (now in 3rd grade) was also diagnosed with the same a month later.

After a lot of research & discussion with our son's teacher, school counselor, his social worker & psychiatrist, and other people (I work in the psych ward at a hospital), my wife & I decided to put him on Vyvanse.

Today is his first day & I'm wondering what to expect. He's on 30mg a day, which is the lowest available dosage. Is there anybody out there on Vyvanse, or have kids on it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

drug interactions with Vyvanse

First of all Vyvanse has only been out there for a few months and only available in the USA. so not many have tried it.It only had a 4 week trial done on it for the age group 6-12. so all the information on line is going to be from that (like side effects and such). I have been looking into it or keeping tabs on it for my son. So please let me know how it turns out. Oh, Make sure you read the drug interactions really well about this one because i have come across you want to avoid Antihistamines, it will make it absorb too fast and he could have a overdose from it. I do not know if true just a parent was talking about it from another form. Good luck

New to Vyvanse

Hi,

My 12 year son has been prescribed Vyvanse. I am going to start giving it to him this weekend, because I want to see how he does on it and to make sure I am around in case he has a reaction. He has been on Adderall for about 2 years and Ritalin to the Adderall. He did really well in school when he was on the Ritalin but he was taking 30 mg. which was making him lethargic and he said he did not like to be so quite especially when around his close friends. He is very irritable and angry lately. He does not seem to care that he is not doing well in school which is not like him. I think it has to do with the Adderall. I hope this Vyvanse works well for him. I will keep everyone posted as how he does on this new med.

symptoms under control

I have been on Vyvanse for several months now. I am on the 50mg dose. I wake up easier. I have all my ADHD symptoms under control. I have had nothing but positive experiences from this medication and it does last 12 hours instead of just part of the day. I don't get a racing heart like I did on Dexedrine. It is like not feeling like you are controlled without meds. What I mean by that is that is that it feels natural to function daily like a normal human being.

Son has been doing loads better

Thanks, Badger. My son has been doing loads better since starting Vyvanse. He has been a little irritable at times (one of the side effects), but he's doing a LOT better at home and at school. He had some nausea the first few days, but even that's gone away. He hasn't had any loss of appetite, and he's not having any trouble sleeping. We couldn't be happier.

Thanks for the info. Since this is so new, there aren't many people with any experience with this medication.

dizzy, side effects

Hi everyone,

My son started the Vyvanse on Saturday. He said he felt a little dizzy but for a short while only. He was able to do some homework and he finished pretty quickly and without my help. I gave it to him at 9am and by 4pm I could tell the medication was wearing off. I was hoping it would have lasted a little longer since he gets out of school at 4 and then we have to deal with the homework. Perhaps he needs to be on 50mg, instead of 30mg. I hope that it helps him in school at least.

Be patient

Try to be patient because everyone's system is different. It may take a little longer for him to get the full effect. Some symptoms can be expected, but if they don't eventually go away tell your doctor about them.

medicine problem?

HI EVERYONE,

My son is not complaining of dizziness anymore in fact he says he is not having any symptoms. He is still eating his breakfast, lunch, and dinner, even having seconds and he is falling asleep at his usual bedtime and sometimes even before. He started taking the Vyvanse 5 days ago on the 30mg. I am not sure yet if it is working well because I have not gotten any grades or feedback from his teachers yet and when I ask him if it is helping he shrugs his shoulders like to say "I don't know". I can tell though that it is not lasting as long as they say it does. I would say the medication wears off after about 7 hours. We are still having the fighting over homework issues which is so frustrating. He is having a major attitude problem and does not seem to care that he is failing just about all his classes even after taking all his privileges away. This kid was in all honor classes last year and now he is flunking. I do not know if it is medicine problem or is it a self esteem or just the age of puberty. I am so stressed out and do not know how to make him care.

side effects and dosage

Supergokart,

Irritability is one of the side effects listed on Vyvanse's web site. My son has occasionally been grumpy as well. However, he's doing so much better in every aspect of life that it far overshadows a little acting out. We usually give him some time to cool down and he's OK.

My son is on 30mg, and I've noticed that the meds work for about 10 hours. If you're seeing the meds not working long enough (give it a moth or so to work), talk to the doctor about going to a higher dosage. Maybe your son has a higher tolerance.

Doing better...

Sam Casey,

Thank you for responding. My son seems to be doing better on the Vyvanse. He said he did alot of classwork and was able to keep up better in school. He actually seemed happier today when I picked him up from school. In the past with his other ADHD medications such as Ritalin and Adderall, the medication has kicked in immediately. I guess Vyvanse takes a little longer to get the full affects. I hope it continues to work even better for him in the coming days.

dosage

I just switched my 11 year old twin boys from 15 mg. Focalin XR (plus extra dosage after school) to 30 mg of Vyvanse. Although we are still on winter break, I am not sure that this dosage will hit the mark for school plus homework. What dosages are you or your children taking? How long before you increased from 30 to 50 mg.?

Teri

Vyvanse

My 14yo ds was on this for a while, about 4 months. He was diagnosed with ADHD over the summer by our ped. Started Concerta reluctantly (ds was balky to try meds or even be dxed). It was not good for him--stomach problems, no appetite, very flat behavior. He then started Vyvanse. Eventually went up to 70 mg. At first all seemed well. His grades were good starting high school (an important goal for both of us). His teachers liked him (he hadsome problems in middle school with a few teachers, but was well-liked by better ones). Social issues seemed to be getting better as well. He was really, really interested in doing better no matter what it took, and he would talk candidly with some people about the ADHD.

Almost overnight, he decided that it didn't help him anymore and was causing him to have stomach aches. His grade was slipping in English. He says the teacher yells a lot and is "mean." She did, however, tell me that he was a very respectful and hard working student and seemed genuinely interested in him. His grades were slipping mainly because he never seemed to hear all the directions about an assignment, or he'd not do all of it and turn in incomplete work. He swears this wasn't on purpose, but out of extreme confusion. He also got a lot of lower grades based on his sloppy handwriting, even when he was trying hard and it was obvious to me that he was, but was also frustrated.

To sum things up, he said he was going to talk to her, but never did. We eventually talked to the guidance counselor and got a 504 in place. I don't think he has been able to use it yet. I don't kow if he has to tell them of his accomodations or what.

But all of this and perhaps something else unnamed (socially, I suspect), caused him to rebel against taking meds. He won't admit he has ADHD now. He just says he has "little trouble remembering things, like anyobody does." And he works very slowly.

The ped didn't think the Vyvanse was the cause of the tummy problems. After a gastroenterologist appt., he was dxed with IBS and given a med for that which works very well. But ds says it was the Vyvanse because he got a lot better after he quit taking it, plus he got more of an appetite again. It depressed him to not want to eat like a farmhand! He used to just take such joy in eating large amounts of food! (and he is not fat--in fact, he began losing on both meds).
