Problems in school

I have an 11 yr old daughter. I adopted her when she was a baby. Her bio mom had many psychiatric problems and was unable to properly take care of her. During her pregnancy she took drugs (legal as well as illegal). I have been told my daughter has ADHD that has been magnified by the drug use and that she quite possibly has other problems (psychiatric). My daughter has no friends at school and has now just given up on school and doing her work. She is extremely bright. I have been considering home schooling her and would like some input on whether anyone else has homeschooled their child due to ADHD or other problems similar to those my daughter might have and how it has affected the child.

Find an ADHD specialist

God Bless you for adopting; that is the first thing I want to say. I would take her to a child psychiatrist who specializes in ADHD. I found my doctor in the back of Driven to Distraction. She is a child psychiatrist even though I am well above 45. The reason for a specialist in the field is that too many doctors don't believe in ADHD; and will diagnosis your child as a schizophrenic or Bi-Polar when they are really ADHD. With the right diagnosis this child can soar. ADD/ADHD has many positive qualities especially when young. The reward of success builds confidence that will get her through some of the difficulties of ADD/ADHD. Good luck in your pursuit of finding the right Doctor. If you need to you can e-mail me.

Homeschooled for kindergarten

I homeschooled my adhd daughter for kindergarten. I made an agreement with her father, my ex husband, that I would only do it for one year. I assumed that her high grades and success would convince him that I should do it longer. There was a teacher we met with every few months, who checked her work and graded her. This teacher said that Bekah was doing so well that she was doing grade 1 work.

I really enjoyed homeschooling her. We had a big group of my friends who were homeschooling so we went on a lot of field trips together.

The thing is, I also love having my daughter in school. I don't have to deal with her hyperness all by myself. The other good thing is that we have to be in a routine. I have always hated routines. However, now that I am in one I function better (I have adhd too). I go to the gym regularly and it is nice to have the freedom to do that and not worry about having to get a babysitter. I do think that homeschooling is good if you can handle it. Just my thoughts.

Adopted a child with ADHD also

I adopted my daughter at 3 and believe she will be diagnosed in the next month with ADHD. Her bio parents also had ADD and couldn't take care of her. Just last night, we were in the emergency room due to dehydration. I am starting her on fish oil capsules as I have read that they seem to help the focus situation. She does go to school as I work. Bless you for wanting to home school!! I find I need the break to function better.

Choosing a school

Hi snipwatts2003,

It's difficult to know if your daughter will benefit from home schooling, but finding an ADHD expert can definitely help you make the decision that's best for her. One of the best ADDitude articles I've found for help with this topic is their guide to "Choosing the Right School": http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/776-2.html

They also have a free guide, "9 Ways to Achieve Success at School" which may be useful for you.

Good Luck!

There is a good book for homeschooling

I can't remember the exact title, but it's something like, "Getting Your Kid Off the Refrigerator and Onto Learning. I think it has a humorous slant with practical helps. I'll try to find out more for sure.

We homeschooled our ds from 2-6h grade. He wasnted to go to PS for 7th. It was better hsing, but school helps us not have to deal with each other so much (yes, that makes me sad). The only thing is, the wrong teacher can rreally blow it with him. He was very angry and upset in school. He was only there for the novelty.
