The night before

Do everything the night before! Clothes, lunches, backpacks. I line everything up at the door. Breakfast is the same everyday - 2 pieces of kid's fortified bread (extra calcium & fiber) with cream cheese and a glass of milk. It's easy and can be carried with in the car - to the bus stop - to the sitters. Most nights, I put her to sleep in her clothes, unless she's wearing jeans. I start waking her up 30 minutes prior to her needing to get up. Lights on and go in every 10 minutes to give a shake. Then when up, straight to the bathroom - brush teeth & hair. Then meds, and breakfast. IF the TV's on forget it, the distraction is way too much and too tempting. I think the most important thing is to leave enough time for all the dawdling (I get up and ready 40 minutes before everyone else) and just accept that mornings are tough with ADD'rs.

HELP! I have tried everything I see in the blog about mornings. My son is 14 years old and definitely a teenager. Most of the time now he actually gets up but then it is a constant battle to move him from one thing to another in the mornings...brush teeth, put in contacts, get socks, put on shoes, etc. He really has no time management skills. I have tried setting timers, standing beside him while he does things, and also giving him time announcements as to how much time is left. He has not learned any coping skills as he was only diagnosed in Fall 2008. I work at school so he goes to work with me, which also makes me late in the mornings. I don't want to start mornings int he screaming mode or overmothering mode.

Morning struggles

Our mornings are better since I started making my daughter ride the bus. She is 10 and we live in a small town, so I would always drop her off on the way to work. But she she was continuously late....and at her school 1 minute is late. I had to be at work BEFORE she had to be at school so I was always late too. (I believe I am ADD too, but am undiagnosed). Now I make her ride the bus which she loves doing. Even if I get up late she is ready quickly and she knows that she can watch tv when she is ready. She is off her meds this summer and still makes the bus for summer school

Routines

I find that having routine cards along with behavior/attitude cards, my kids do best. By providing a visual representation of what you expect and working together with your child to structure the routines, behaviors and rewards, you provide the structure your ADHD child needs. We use a simple and easy-to-use website to create these cards. It's a click and print program with lots of options. It costs $1 for the month so it's well worth trying out. I highly recommend it.
