ADDLightenment

Just some thoughts for the day on having ADD. I know almost all of you have been called "different" at one time or another. It comes with the territory, having ADD. It used to depress me. I was constantly trying to change myself and my ways in order to fit someone elses definition of who they thought I should or could be. How's that for a run on sentence? Anyway...

As I have learned more about ADD and about myself in the process I now think differently about it. I do not need to fit someone's definition. Rather than trying to change my ADD traits, I have come to embrace them. Rather than approach ADD as a disorder, I look at it as a gift in most ways! I use the word ADDlightenment to describe its gifts.

As an example... I have a vast list of interests. When I decide I am interested in something I go full force at it. I find out all that I can about it. I read books and seek out experts who can share what they know.I learn new ways of doing things and have some incredible experiences from which to grow. This gives me an array of knowledge that most normal people do not have. Even if this sounds a bit egotistical, I am proud of this part of myself. It also makes for very lively conversations in almst any situation. In other words my ADD enlightens me.

In turn it can enlighten others. We can teach others that ADD is not something to dread, but rather a part of ourselves to be shared. We can teach others to draw outside the lines, think outside the "box" and just encourage them to try things they otherwise might avoid. Thus missing out on some amazing life experiences.

So take this day, embrace yourself and share your strength with those around you. Show them how great life can be when one is ADDlightened! Jennifer

Thank you, Jennifer! It was nice reading that.

I have this feeling that I need to try and be better than my siblings to prove to my parents that I am not any less than they. It's something I need to get over, I recognize that. Over time

Experts on Everything

It is pretty enjoyable to be an expert about vastly unrelated things sometimes. If nothing else, you've generally got something to talk about with any given person.

Diving Headfirst

The other great thing about ADD I have found, is that if I want to start a new project or hobby, and it is something that I am interested in, then I don't think twice about starting. Most normal people talk themselves out of it, whereas I dive in headfirst and worry about consequences later. Think how much we would miss out on if we chickened out of everything!

Don't worry about your siblings being better than now, some day you will have your shining moment, when you do something that just wow's everyone. There are very dark moments to ADD, but there are also some super bright times!

ADDvantage

I call it ADDvantage.

It was also the name of my newsletter, since Mary Jane Johnson had already taken ADDult News.

We're inventors. Last month I had to remove the 43 foot high dead tree in my backyard. Well, hanging on to a tree while trying to cut off a limb is not my bag of tea, so I drilled 1" holes into the trunk, and inserted 6" pieces of a wood dowel to climb on all the way up as high as I needed to, and then a ½ inch hole to mount an "L" shaped steel threaded bar into, then rigged up the electric chain saw to mount onto the bar, and tied a rope onto it. I cut the branch down while standing on the ground.

It worked.

Another branch I had to tie up before cutting it, so that it would fall and swing to the north before dropping. It was directly above a shed, which would have destroyed it if I just dropped it where it was. It ended up hanging a foot and a half off the ground.
