CHADD Web Site
I don't live in Colorado, so I can provide specifics. Have you tried the C.H.A.D.D. web site, at CHADD.org? Within the site is a list of CHADD-related groups across the country. If there are any megachurches in Denver, such a church might have an ADHD support group for adults. This is the case where I live (So. Cal.). I wish you success in your search!

Daytona Beach Support Group?
Daytona Beach, FL needs a support group as well. I signed on for a CHADD's list looking for people interested in forming a support group. I've gotten email from Tampa, Clearwater & other parts not nearby. I was given 2 local phone numbers to try (guess they had a group at one time) but no one returned my voice mails. I have so much to follow up on that chore in itself becomes overwhelming! Anyone else from East Volusia County in FL interested in forming a support group? thanks!! nancy

Support/ Self-help idea
It's easy to form a group in your own area. Just post on www.craigslist.com for your town, and find a place and time to meet with those who respond. A public place is best when beginning, like a coffeehouse, etc. You can also do this as a member of www.meet-up.com. It is best to specify "adult ADD only" since many parents with ADD children are also looking for help --- adult issues are much different since guidance, education and "control" are not paramount. ADD adults can benefit from validation from each other and encouragement. Adults with ADD do very well in peer support groups where the focus is on positive ideas, such as what works for you in adapting to a non-ADD world. Also discussing articles from ADDitude Mag works very well. Open discussion can be handled by introducing a topic and setting limits on speaking time. These groups are not therapy but more like 12 Step meeting formats with no cross-talk. It's also a good place to share about local resources for adults with ADD. Try it! I have had good expereinces with it. |

Support Groups
My family is in the foreign service and we've lived overseas for the past 10 years where there were no support groups. I found that it was very easy to start them. Just spread the word at your school, work, church etc. You don't have to lead it so much as organize it - plan where to meet, time, place etc. Let the members plan the meetings if you don't want to. Sometimes we'd have a speaker but the best meetings usually involved simple ideas like giving a short report on a book that's helped you. Or watching a video and discussing it afterwards. I found these groups to be incredibly helpful and important for my sanity. |
