Objective Diagnosis

Which testing is a medical review board (specifically Virginia Retirement System) most likely to consider objective and authoritative? Is SPECT imaging considered too experimental? Are there any neurologists in the Washington DC area who could make a diagnosis with, say, an MRI?

VRS refuses to tell me what they find acceptable: they just say that I should submit my documentation and they will let me know if it passes muster.

What do you recommend?

diagnosis

You should be able to ask your Physician for a written diagnosis to provide to the insurance company.

Do not exist

SPECTs are considered "rocket science". The closest you can get is a detailed neuropsychologic evaluation (if is an adult, of course). It the same exam you do before and after a brain surgery to see if something is demaged after the medical precedure. Costs around US$ 800,00, 3 sessions of around 1,5 hour.

Reports...

You have some options...but it all depends on your local board or insurance company. Basically - what will they accept as satisfactory?

A physician could certainly write a note or letter. A psychologist or other therapist could also provide the necessary information (diagnosis, treatment, etc...), or sometimes the company / organization is looking for a formal report as a result of psychological testing.

I am not 100% here, but I don't believe any type of "scans" can without certainty suggest ADHD. The scans are only suggestive of certain areas of the brain being used during the scan - and there could be bias.

Just my $0.02.
