Need Help Finding Local Help

First off, this is my first post after reading just about everything on the site. I'm a 53 yr old male and almost 99% sure I have had ADD all my life, but have not been diagnosed. I've looked for a doctor that specializes in ADD but can not find one in all of the referal lists here and there are no support groups listed either. How does one go about finding help? I just recently lost my job and I'm pretty sure that my ADD was part of the cause and I really don't want this to happen again. I'm looking to start a new job in the next couple of weeks and want to make every effort to start off on the right foot. The articles on organizational tips have helped a lot. On a side note, I have not seen any information about the dangers of people that have had heart issues and which drugs are safe or not. I've only heard a little about most, if not all of them, not being reccomended. I had a minor heart attack 18 months ago and have a stent installed.

Looking forward to any advise that you may be able to share.

Talk to Your Local Doctors

If you have kids, talk to the school psychologist and ask them to recommend a psychiatrist/psychologist that either does testing, or is well respected and would be able to refer you to someone. Also, check with any local psychiatric hospitals to see if they have any referrals. Also it can't hurt to ask the hospital. especially if it has a university affiliate they might be able to give you names.. If you're looking for insurance to cover the testing you can talk with them too, they may have a list of doctors in your area that are on your plan... Or,you can come to nyc and use my doctor. But I'm sure you'll find someone near you... Good luck!! It sounds like you're totally on the right track

ADDitude Directory of ADD Doctors

Hi. If you didn't have any luck finding an ADHD doctor in the ADDitude Online Directory (http://www.additudemag.com/resources/directory/professionals.html), you might try contacting an ADHD psychologist or coach or therapist in your area who could recommend a doctor... It looks like there are a few coaches in Illinois who might have some recommendations.

Hope this helps!

Hallowell's Book as Resource

I would ask to see a psychiatrist who deals with children because resisitence by non-ADDers can be difficult. I found my doctor in the back of a book by Dr. Hallowell and his associates call there number and they will have numbers of people who specialize in your need area of expertize. the rest will take care of itself.

CHADD

If you haven't already tried it, you might want to check out www.chadd.org. They have a list of local chadd groups in your area that might be able to give you some doctors. As mentioned by others, your family doctor may know of someone, university hospitals, pediatricians or schools and parents of children with ADD might be able to help you. Good luck, Elaine

More on ADD Medications

Steve, I forgot to reply to your other question. Straterra is a non-stimulant that can be used (although it is not effective for everyone) and some antidepressants, such as Wellbutrin can offer some relief as well.

My husband had a major heart attack with 5 stents put in four years ago. He tried the Strattera first for his ADHD but it didn't help him. We discussed the use of stimulants with his heart doctor and the doctor who was treating him for his depression and ADHD. There is a risk associated with using a stimulant for heart patients but they couldn't say for sure that it would cause a problem.

We signed a waiver stating that we knew there was a risk involved but we wanted to try the medication for ADHD. That was a personal decision we made because we felt that the ADHD was causing significant impairment in his life. He has been on Adderall for three years now with no problems. You may be able to find a non-stimulant medication that will help you. If not, you and your doctor would have to decide whether or not you wanted to use a stimulant.

Good News

Thanks for the replies. I'm happy to say that I got a new job today that has tons of potential IF I'm able to manage the ADD and really apply myself.

Discipline has always been a problem for me and my memory sucks! I'm trying to adapt a BlackBerry Pearl as a calendar and alarms for reminders, but it's difficult without the right software.

I've got an awesome idea for an ADD software assistant, but need to find someone who can write the program.

Is Clariton D considered a stimulant? I've been taking it for sinus issues for years and I've heard that it has some benefits for ADD sufferers.

I live in brampton ontario canada and I am looking for any help for my ADHD son that does NOT involve medicaiton. His only real challenge is at school. According to his teacher he can't stay focused on his work. Everybody else seems to be able to handle him just fine.

Local support group

Inga,

Have you checked out www.chadd.org? You can click on your state and there will be a listing of chadd support groups in the area. You may be able to check with the school, another parent or 504 coordinator who knows of a support group. Doctors and therapists may also know if there are any in the area.

good luck,

Elaine

After going through {no joke} about 20 different PDA style phones and palms. My recomendation is the following. For us ADDers the KISS method is bet. Keep I It Simple Stupid. [sorry if that offends] :)

But for now use the calendar reminder function heavily. You can put in daily reminders and you wil also be able to see of you have any conflicts. Second. For task there is a Task function - use that -heavily. Create different categories for different parts of your life. Business Daliy To Do Grocery Whatever you need.

The fancy crap is ussally that -crap.
