Why Can't I 'Fix' Her ADHD?

I know my daughter's not actually broken. But some days I just want a magic fix to make all the distractibility, impulsivity, and anxiety go away.

Last night a desperate thought fought its way through the harried chaos of my brain and into my consciousness:

I CAN’T DO THIS. I need to send Natalie away for a week -- somewhere — and have someone “fix” her.

Sadly, “somewhere” doesn’t exist. And what she has can’t be “fixed.”

I know, I know. She’s not actually broken, she’s just wired differently. And with the right ADHD medication and coping skills, she’ll have a perfectly marvelous life.

But getting there — to the right medication and to coping skill mastery — has gotten to me.

We’re in the midst of yet another med change, and so far, not so good. Nat’s taking 20 mg of Ritalin LA, twice a day, and Prozac at bedtime. On the positive side, the motor-craziness that the Focalin XR seemed to cause is gone. Nat seems more herself, somehow. And she’s sleeping beautifully. On the negative side, she’s very, very, distractible and impulsive. It’s clear she’s not being “naughty.” She really can’t control herself.

I have a call into the doctor again. Can we try a higher dose? I hope so.

Because the only “somewhere” that Natalie belongs is in my arms. I just need the strength to hold her.

    13 year old girls
Kay- I sympathize with you SO much. I have a 14 year old daughter and she is starting to be fun again. I'm proud of myself that she is still alive. Your daughter and you will survive too! 13 year olds without ADD are irrational, crazy and a pain. Throw in our daughter's specialness and it is even more "fun". Try relax as much as you can. This probally won't last!

    The Right ADHD Medication
I went throught a similar period of frustration with my son a few years ago as he was adjusting to his dosage levels. It was a trying time! Thankfully, we did adjust and his smyptoms have improved gradually over time. He's away at college now. I understand that adjusting to medication can be very difficult for some children. My son and I worked together to combat this illness. We found that the things we did added together and each one helped a bit - exercise, understanding and discussing ADHD, better diet and nutrition! less tv.... As a parent I did all I could to help my son through this and working together strengthened us both.

I know exactly how you feel. I am yet on another med change for my 13 year old daughter. We are going to try ritalin again. She was on ritalin in 3rd grade .She was so excited to tell me that day about how she could actually hear her teacher talking and the teacher commented on how Gena was actually focused and listening to her. I took her off ritalin because it made her antisocial and she would sing violent lyrics to nursery rhymes..( like mary had a gun in her hand instead of lamb) My son pointed out that she sings those sorts of songs when she takes her pill. She has been on Adderall for 2 years now. If it works at all, it is minimal and only in the beginning. Her dosage is always being upped. She is on 50mgs of adderall a day now with 2.5 pills of clonodine to help her fall asleep....only it doesn't even help her fall asleep really. She goes to bed at like 12 or later instead of like 3 a.m. It is me constantly nagging at her always. I fear that giving kids pills only builds tolerance..another fear......when i do not give her the pills..she acts like..shes crazy. Laughting wildy...acting loopy...cant explain it.I am going to pick up her new ritalin prescription tomorrow. All i can hope for is that one day.....we will somewhat control this.

    I have felt it too
Moms are wired to want to fix things. I too feel I woud give anything to "erase" my son's ADHD. Meds can be really great when you find the right Rx though (it took us 4 drugs in 6 combinations -- now on 27 mg Concerta and great). He is still himself but can now get his school work done and stay out of the principal's office. Finding order will be a relief. Penny http://adhdmomma.blogspot.com
