Does Daytrana Help Your ADHD Kid?

Switching Natalie's ADHD meds was a frightening - though necessary - recent step. We're feeling our way through Focalin, but now I need some Mom feedback on the Daytrana Patch...

Several readers responded to my plea for information about Focalin and Focalin XR as my daughter Natalie transitioned to taking it. Now, let’s help Adrienne!

Adrienne joined our discussion about meds to treat ADHD via a comment to my earlier post. She needs to hear from other parents about their children’s responses to the Daytrana patch. Her 6-year-old son just started treatment with the patch, and after two terrible days, it appeared to be doing absolutely nothing to control his ADHD symptoms.

Should they try a higher dose, or give up? Although I’m sure she’s called the doctor by now, there’s nothing like real-life experiences to guide our conversations with doctors, confirm our gut instincts, or help us look at our situations from a fresh angle.

So, does anyone else fear that multiple daily doses of short-acting Ritalin are the only answer for your ADHD child? Or, did you find an alternative that freed you from feeling chained to the clock? Was Daytrana the answer to your ADHD prayers?

And what’s the deal with a medication working beautifully for several months or years, then not working anymore? Do we all have lifetimes of these trying trial-and-error med experiments ahead of us?

So, let’s take this opportunity to help Adrienne. You never know... it might be your turn next!

ADHD and Its Drugs v alternative solutions
I do have empathy with your situation and I hope the following will help: It is a great shame that so many children are diagnosed with the made-up psychiatric term "ADHD" and then prescribed mind-altering drugs (like Ritalin) that have potential, horrendous side effects, which do occur (many cases have been recorded) see http://www.adhdtruth.com for the facts. It is, in my opinion, a covered up evil that, even though these drugs will possibly give the apparency of ‘working’, though in truth, as well as having a high potential of causing untold harm to our children, also creates untold upset for parents. There are many Dr's. and like professionals, other individuals, and various groups that deplore the action of prescribing mind-altering drugs (like Ritalin) to children. Fortunately, there are alternative, sane, workable solutions in helping our children with attention, behavior and learning problems (without mind-altering drugs). Please visit 'Sources of Help' page: http://www.adhdtruth.com/testimonials.html - which gives the view of many professionals and also various sources of help in various countries (that do not use mind-altering drugs in their treatment). Also included are many books on the subject. Before any parent allows prescribing of psychiatric mind-altering drugs to their child, I earnestly request they carry out all necessary research to arrive at a sound judgement. If you have, or know of a child, already taking one of these mind-altering drugs, I respectfully ask that you contact a very good source that offers alternative, very workable and safe treatment solutions. My best to you and all, Ray

    Daytrana Great for My 8-Year-Old
My son was diagnosed with ADHD in August and went on the patch in September. (He can't swallow pills, which is why he was given the patch.) The patch works well for him; it's no longer World War III at homework time, and he sits and reads by himself now. His OT therapist said he is like a different child when he needs to practice handwriting. My son does not have they hyperactive component. The only drawback of the patch that I have seen is that it's harder for him to go to sleep at night and it does curb his appetite, which comes back when the patch's effect wears off.
