Focalin for ADHD

Does your ADHD child take Focalin? How does it stack up compared to other ADHD meds your child has tried?

Welcome to Day Four!

Of Natalie’s new ADHD medication, that is.

My consultation with Dr. Halbur resulted in a switch from the old reliable short-acting Ritalin to Focalin XR. Dr. Halbur described Focalin to this layperson as follows: It’s Ritalin with one molecule removed, and because of that slight difference, it’s less likely to cause irritability or to suppress appetite. Since we’re using the 12-hour extended release formulation, we’re hoping to see more consistent effects throughout the day to help with Nat’s concentration at school. The dose she’s taking should be equivalent to a small increase in dosage as compared to her Ritalin regimen.

We instituted the change on Saturday morning, so that we could spend two full days with Natalie while she adjusted. Then we sent her to spend the entire afternoon with her Other Parents. She went to Harry’s to play. Her O.P.s reported exactly what we observed that day—a slightly manic-y happiness and motor-excitement. We chalked part of that up to a thrilling new phenomenon — Bobby — joining Harry and Natalie for the day.

The most notable difference we’ve seen so far is Nat’s appetite building from day to day like an incoming tsunami. I worked until 9:00 last night, but Don said she ate a good supper, and then continued to eat all evening, right up until bedtime. This morning for breakfast she had a bowl of cereal, a bowl of ice cream, and a blueberry nutra-grain waffle. In addition to all that, she requested pancakes. Makes me feel like we’ve been starving the poor kid. Maybe she’ll be able to hold up those size 6X Slim jeans before long.

The jury’s still out on the overall success of this change, but I’m optimistic.

    Focalin XR
My son started Focalin XR 5 mg. last week. He was diagnosed ADHD Combined. We have never had any complaints about his behavior...He really is a great kid BUT has problems achieving in school. We noticed a SLIGHT subdued tone to him...no big deal.....Less appetite...less eating for boredom.... On Saturday he spent a full 10 hrs. building a very intricate lego city....He never really had the patience for lego before....He seems to be able to really concentrate better.... We will keep observing him...

    Focalin
Focalin was the first med we tried three years ago. At the time school work/behavior was the issue and it did the trick. But it also made her a zombie and the evening crashes became worse over time. We eventually switched to Concerta, and recently Vyvanse. She's growing so fast we that just when we think we have it figured out, the med loses it's effectiveness.

    Focalin for ADHD
Well I am new to this meds treatment as my daughter has always had attention problems but this year it seemed to get to the point where she was really not focusing on her work and they had to constantly re-focus her. So after taking her to the dr they did say she had inattentive part of ADHD. And she perscribed Focalin XR. Now the 5 MG didnt do anything but the 10MG definitely had an effect. She has only been on it for 5 days and the teacher has said that she has definitely seen an improvement. As far as side effect, the only thing I have seen so far (keeping my fingers crossed for none) is that she has complained of her stomach hurting but that is usually when she take the medicine and doesn't eat first. I know it is a little but hope it helps.

    Focalin XR for ADHD
Both my kids recently started on focalin. My 10 y.o. daughter says it makes a big difference in her day. I am told from her teachers thaat she is concentrating, focusing better and completing her work on time. It is the first medicine we tried for both our kids (chosen because of it's ability to be "sprinkled" on pudding) My son who is 7 has the hyperactivity component. While the Focalin XR is helping him (according to the teachers) , I notice it wears off in abut 8 hours (just in time to start h.w.) We have started him on a 5mg booster dose of regular Focalin for after school) I haven't seen an appetite change, but he does complain his stomach hurts on a regular basis--usually when he has to a task he doesn't like. At times I have noticed almost a rebounding effect where he gets crazy-wild at the end of the day. We go back to the Dr. next week, so we will see.

    Do I know you?
Wow! A local person. Do we know each other? Thanks for the heads up--picking has been an issue for Nat, but I don't see any change recently. Do you remember how long your daughter was taking Focalin before you: 1) knew it was working for the ADHD 2) noticed the picking problem? Kay

    Focalin for ADHD
Dr. Halbur had also perscribed Focalin for my 7 year old daughter. It worked wonders on the ADHD piece but added an new piece to her, she became an obsessive picker. She would pick at her body until she had little scabs all over herself. At one point this summer she had 40 band-aides on her. This is when Dr. Halbur turned us over to a Psychiatrist. My daughter is no longer on the Focalin!
