Nonverbal Learning Disability (NVLD) is poorly understood and frequently seen in children with ADHD. NVLD is defined by core deficits in visual and spatial abilities, and difficulty with social interactions and/or math skills. Children with NVLD often have other difficulties including problems with executive functioning, fine motor skills, anxiety, and pragmatic (social) language. As a result, these children often experience social and academic challenges. Since NVLD is not well understood, children with NVLD are often first diagnosed with ADHD before the NVLD is recognized. This late diagnosis can lead to missed opportunities for intervention. Medication and behavior therapy may help reduce symptoms of ADHD, but children with NVLD also need targeted treatment for the deficits and limitations that come with that condition. Children do best when they get help from a team of professionals—a neuropsychologist, occupational therapist, education specialist, and a speech and language therapist.

Amy Margolis, Ph.D., is a neuropsychologist at Columbia University Medical Center in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry where she leads neuroimaging studies of NVLD, Reading Disorder, and the effects of the chemical environment on the developing brain and the manifestation of learning problems. Her research is funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, The NVLD Project, and Promise Project at Columbia. She is also Director of Neuropsychology at the Brooklyn Learning Center where she trains neuropsychologists to assess and treat children with learning disabilities and ADHD.
