Finding Myself Through Writing

Could you imagine unicorns sneezing glitter? No? What about strips of bacon dancing in the street to Kool & the Gang's "Celebration?" No? Truth be told, as I sit here trying to think of how to start this blog post, these are just some of the images swirling around in my head. One might think I've consumed bath salts, but no, no...this is what I deal with. Daily. Just ask my friends: The proof is in my Facebook status updates.

Just in case you didn't know, writing is quite possibly one of the most difficult tasks for someone coping with ADHD. Believe it or not, I'm no exception to the rule. Part of my displeasure/frustration comes from a fear of having my writing torn apart and ridiculed. Trust me, it's happened before. Growing up, I will never forget one teacher I had in high school. She never provided constructive criticism, but rather snarky, condescending remarks in any bit of whitespace that she could find on my papers. I started college fearing I would not succeed at writing, but you know what?

I proved myself wrong.

It's because of expressing my thoughts as a blogger for ADDitude Magazine that I feel a bit more confident in my writing ability. I've second-guessed myself quite a bit (not sure why), and I'm in a never-ending, internal struggle to remove the negative messaging I once received. I know that there will always be haters, but as long as the non-haters outweigh them, I think I'll be A-okay. One of the many mottos I live by: Haters gonna hate. Potatoes gonna potate. Live it. Love it.

As I continue to write for ADDitude, I will always welcome comments and/or suggestions. I feel that I've found a supportive community among my readers, and that means more to me than you'll ever know. As long as you continue to read, I'll continue to write.
