Fear and Perfectionism Are My Kryptonite

I know I'll make mistakes as I get my new business off the ground — so how can I let go of anxiety and perfectionism long enough to make it happen?

I tend to have a lot of ideas. I'm pretty sure I have more ideas while brushing my teeth than an entire company has during an hour-long brainstorming session. It's one of these "superpowers" that I've been "blessed" with as someone who has been diagnosed with ADHD. And it's a problem.

Don't get me wrong — I love having lots of ideas. It's when you have so many ideas that you can't decide which one to implement first that is the problem. In addition to an influx of ideas, I'm always striving to make sure my final decision is "perfect" before pursuing it, and we all know that no one is perfect. It's a vicious, internal struggle that I can't seem to shake, and I work through it the best way I know how.

Recently, after working with several freelance clients, I decided to focus my energy on creating my own business. One thing about creating a company is that you need a name, and I have been exhausting every possible combination of words in the English language to create something clever. I'm now on week number of three of self-brainstorming the "perfect" name for my company. Sigh.

Coupled with the perfectionism I experience, is fear. In my world, the two are perfectly paired like Sonny and Cher, salt and pepper, peanut butter and jelly...and at times, they can wreak havoc in the decision-making process. It's a good thing I have friends who have confidence in me, but at times hearing them constantly say, "JUST DO IT!" sounds like a Nike commercial on repeat. Lately, this has been an exercise in going for what I want, realizing I'll make a mistake (or several), and it's completely okay (and normal) to be scared.

Focusing on pushing forward is proving to be a difficult task.

Do you ever find yourself crippled by having too many ideas? Have you figured out a way to sort everything out and focus on one thing?

Entrepreneurship is said to be a great career path for individuals with ADHD. Many great CEOs including David Neeleman (founder, JetBlue Airways) and Paul Orfalea (founder, Kinko's) have succeeded with ADHD.
