3 Handy Gizmos for ADD Adults

The editors pick three cool gadgets that can make life easier for any adult with ADHD.

Pen Pal

If you get distracted during a meeting at work, don't worry about missing a word. The Pulse Smartpen by Livescribe (from $150) has you covered while you daydream.

The digital pen records your boss’s pearls as you take notes with it, synchronizing the big guy’s words with your handwritten notes. When you get home, upload it, if you want, to your PC or Mac for safekeeping.

If you need to play back a specific part of the meeting, tap the pen on a sentence in your notes, and the recording picks up at that point.

“Talking” Microwave

If you have ever put a slice of pizza or last night’s spaghetti in the microwave, only to forget about it for an hour or a day, you need a microwave with a “cooking complete” beeper. A machine with this function reminds you, every minute, that your food is nuked and ready to eat. It says, in effect, back away from the computer screen, and eat already. Says one happy soul on addforums.com: “I love my ‘ADHD microwave.’ It has saved me from throwing away a lot of food.”

Breakfast Machine

Workday mornings are a series of repetitive and harrowing transitions—from waking up on time to getting dressed to commuting to work. Who has a moment to prepare breakfast when you discover that you’ve forgotten to put on your underwear? You do, with the ADD-friendly Egg & Muffin Toaster ($53 or less) by Back to Basics.

In about four minutes, this super-toaster will poach an egg, toast bread or a bagel, and warm up pre-cooked breakfast meat—all at once. This smart appliance coordinates the cooking, so that all items are done at the same time.
